The Nikon Z 5 is a compact FX-format mirrorless camera designed to handle both still photography and video with ease. It features a 24.3 MP CMOS sensor and an EXPEED 6 image processor, offering a wide ISO range up to 51200, continuous shooting at up to 4.5 fps, and UHD 4K video recording at 30 fps.

Its imaging performance is supported by a hybrid autofocus system with 273 selectable points. This AF system combines phase-detection and contrast-detection for fast, accurate focusing and reliable subject tracking. Face Detection is available in both stills and video modes, while Eye Detection AF offers more precise focus for portrait photographers working with human or animal subjects.

The sensor and processor are housed in a sleek but robust magnesium alloy body with weather sealing, making the camera suitable for use in difficult weather conditions. A 3.6 million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder delivers a sharp, high-resolution view at eye level, and the 3.2" tilting touchscreen LCD with 1.04 million dots makes it easy to shoot from high and low angles. For sharing and remote control, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth work with the Nikon SnapBridge app to transfer photos and videos wirelessly and to control the camera from a mobile device.

24.3 MP FX-format sensor and EXPEED 6 processor

The full-frame, 24.3 MP FX-format CMOS sensor is paired with the EXPEED 6 image processor to provide a balance of high sensitivity, detailed image quality, and responsive performance. The native ISO range of 100–51200 supports shooting in a wide variety of lighting conditions and can be extended up to ISO 102400 for very low-light scenes. The combination of sensor resolution and size helps deliver clean images with smooth color transitions and reduced noise throughout the ISO range.

In addition to enhancing image quality, the EXPEED 6 processor enables a maximum full-resolution continuous shooting speed of 4.5 fps and allows you to capture 8 MP stills while recording video.

The sensor design also incorporates a 273-point hybrid autofocus system using both phase-detection and contrast-detection to quickly and accurately acquire focus in stills and video. Eye Detection AF uses facial recognition to keep focus locked onto a subject’s eyes, and Face Detection works for both humans and animals in stills and video.

UHD 4K video recording

The Z 5 is capable of much more than still photography. It supports UHD 4K video recording at up to 30 fps and Full HD recording at up to 60 fps. Movie files can be saved directly to the camera’s memory cards or recorded externally via HDMI. UHD 4K recording uses a 1.7x crop from the center of the frame, while Full HD uses the entire full-frame area. The camera also offers in-camera time-lapse shooting and can produce a finished UHD 4K time-lapse video file directly.

Sensor-shift Vibration Reduction

The camera body includes a 5-axis sensor-shift Vibration Reduction (VR) system that compensates for up to five stops of camera shake, regardless of the lens used. When using adapted lenses with the optional FTZ Adapter, 3-axis stabilization is available. For video work, Electronic VR can be enabled to further steady handheld footage.

Body design and connectivity

• A 3.2" LCD with 1.04 million dots provides bright, clear image playback and live view. The tilting design helps when shooting from high and low angles, and the touchscreen interface allows intuitive control over settings, focus, and menus.

• A 3.69 million-dot electronic viewfinder offers comfortable, detailed eye-level viewing.

• Dual SD memory card slots support UHS-II, enabling high-speed and efficient photo and video storage.

• The magnesium alloy chassis is dust- and weather-resistant, making the camera suitable for demanding environments and harsh conditions.

• The EN-EL15c rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides approximately 470 shots per charge. In-camera USB charging is supported, even while the camera is in use. The Z 5 is also compatible with the optional MB-N10 multi-battery power pack for extended shooting.
