Description

The Panasonic Lumix S5 II mirrorless camera is built for creators who rely on strong performance in both photography and video. It uses a newly developed 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor and an updated L2 image processor, making it the first Lumix camera to feature Phase Hybrid AF for fast, accurate autofocus. Taking full advantage of this sensor and processor, the S5 II records 6K video for up to 30 minutes and offers unlimited 4K recording. It is also tuned for video work with a new Active I.S. system that stabilizes handheld and walking shots for smoother footage.

New sensor and processing engine

The enhanced 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor, combined with the L2 engine, introduces a Phase Hybrid AF system with 779 phase-detection points for much improved subject tracking. The camera delivers a wide dynamic range and a standard ISO range of 100–51,200, expandable to 50–204,800, so it can be used reliably in many different lighting conditions.

For fast action, the S5 II can shoot at up to 9 fps using the mechanical shutter and up to 30 fps with the electronic shutter at full resolution. The in-body 5-axis sensor-shift stabilization not only supports everyday shooting but also enables a High Resolution mode. In this mode, eight exposures are captured and merged into a single 96MP RAW or JPEG file (12000 × 8000 pixels), ideal for tripod-based work with static subjects when maximum detail and color accuracy are required.

6K and 4K video recording

Alongside its stills performance, the S5 II offers advanced video capabilities. It records full-frame 6K 30p video in 4:2:0 10-bit color for up to 30 minutes. It also supports unlimited recording in DCI and UHD 4K 60p 4:2:2 10-bit modes. For slow motion, the camera can capture video at up to 120p, making it easy to create smooth, high-resolution slow-motion sequences. RAW output through HDMI is available via an optional license.

V-Log is pre-installed, delivering a flat, neutral gamma profile with approximately 14+ stops of dynamic range. This offers significant flexibility for color grading and allows footage to be matched seamlessly with Panasonic VariCam cinema cameras.

To handle a wide range of lighting while maintaining low noise, the S5 II uses Dual Native ISO, with two separate base circuits per pixel:

  • Low ISO circuit base values: ISO 100 (standard), ISO 640 (V-Log), ISO 400 (HLG), ISO 200 (Cinelike D2/V2)

  • Low Noise circuit base values: ISO 640 (standard), ISO 4000 (V-Log), ISO 2500 (HLG), ISO 1250 (Cinelike D2/V2)

Phase Hybrid AF system

The S5 II is the first Lumix mirrorless camera to adopt a Phase Hybrid AF system, combining phase-detection and contrast-detection autofocus. With 779 phase-detection points, it delivers fast, reliable AF performance for both stills and video.

This system is designed to remain dependable in situations that traditionally challenge autofocus, including low light, strong backlighting, and scenes with multiple moving subjects. It continuously tracks the subject you choose, helping ensure sharp focus even in complex environments with overlapping people or changing lighting.

Dual I.S. 2 and Active I.S.

For handheld photography, Dual I.S. 2 combines in-body 5-axis stabilization with compatible lens-based stabilization to offer up to approximately 6.5 stops of shake compensation. For video, the newly developed Active I.S. mode improves stabilization while the camera is moving, especially during walking shots, resulting in smoother handheld footage.

Panasonic Lumix S 20–60mm f/3.5–5.6 lens

The Lumix S 20–60mm f/3.5–5.6 is a compact, versatile zoom lens designed for full-frame L-Mount cameras. Covering ultra-wide to short telephoto focal lengths, it is well suited for landscapes, interiors, environmental portraits, and everyday shooting. On APS-C cameras, it provides an equivalent range of about 30–90 mm.

The lens can focus as close as 5.91" (15 cm) and offers up to 0.43x maximum magnification, making it useful for near-macro work and detailed close-ups. Its optical design includes 11 elements in 9 groups:

  • Two aspherical elements and one ultra high refractive index (UHR) element to reduce distortion and spherical aberrations and maintain sharpness across the frame.

  • Three extra-low dispersion elements to minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing, improving clarity and color fidelity.

A stepping AF motor provides fast, quiet autofocus for both stills and video. Additional features include:

  • AF/MF switch for quick toggling between autofocus and manual focus.

  • Rounded 9-blade diaphragm for smooth, attractive bokeh.

  • Splash-, dust-, and freeze-resistant design for use in challenging weather down to 14°F (–10°C).

  • Fluorine coating on the front element to repel oil and dirt, making cleaning easier.
