The glassblowers play a key role, producing mouth-blown crystal glass spheres available in diameters of 34 cm, 40 cm, and an impressive 51 cm. This allows for a map scale usually seen only in large atlases.

The Duo Map

When the globe is unlit, the political map displays the countries of the world in various coordinated colors. Once illuminated, the physical map reveals mountains, tectonic plates, plains, and sea-beds. The map is applied manually to a seamless, highly luminous blown crystal sphere.

The illuminated map creates an astonishing impression of relief. COLUMBUS is dedicated not only to printing maps but also to achieving an incredibly deep, flawless shine. Production begins in a special clean printing room, where only top-quality acrylic sheets are permitted to prevent dust particles from affecting the process. Up to 24 successive layers of color are printed, with a curing process, inspection, and cleaning between each layer. After printing, a high-gloss clear coat is applied, and the map undergoes a final inspection by the cartographic department.

Hand-blowing a crystal glass globe of 21 inches (51 cm) is a major challenge, mastered by only a few glass artisans worldwide. The cartography is hand-applied using a papering technique passed down through generations and uniquely perfected by COLUMBUS.

Enhance your Columbus DUO globe experience by downloading the Columbus 4D Globe app for iPhone or iPad and exploring virtual reality features. By moving your device over the illuminated DUO globe, you can see weather or temperature data for major cities appear above the globe. You can also access a country encyclopedia with regularly updated information about countries worldwide. Alternative maps are available to offer new perspectives on the globe’s surface, and new topics are added regularly. The app is available for the Columbus DUO series and works only on iPhone or iPad.

Compatibility with the Columbus Audio/Video-Pen OID

This globe is compatible with the optional Columbus Audio/Video-Pen OID, which uses optical image decoding technology. By touching the pen’s sensor to the globe, you can access linked audio or video files. The pen plays the selected content through its built-in speaker or via headphones.

For example, by selecting "Country Information," you can hear details about a country's size, population, capital, and more, depending on where the pen touches the globe. Under "Interesting Facts," you’ll find in-depth and fascinating information about each country. The "National Anthems" category plays the anthem for the selected country. You can also use the Quiz category to test your knowledge and get answers by simply tapping on the relevant spot on the globe.
