Astronomik Filters ProPlanet 742 M62 (67187)

The Astronomik ProPlanet 742 IR-pass filter is specifically designed for imaging the Moon and planets, particularly Mars, using telescopes with apertures of 6" (150 mm) or larger. It allows only infrared light with wavelengths greater than 742 nm to pass, significantly reducing the effects of atmospheric turbulence ("seeing") and enabling sharper images compared to visible light imaging.

Description

The Astronomik ProPlanet 742 IR-pass filter is specifically designed for imaging the Moon and planets, particularly Mars, using telescopes with apertures of 6" (150 mm) or larger. It allows only infrared light with wavelengths greater than 742 nm to pass, significantly reducing the effects of atmospheric turbulence ("seeing") and enabling sharper images compared to visible light imaging. This filter also benefits from a dark sky background during advanced dawn, making it possible to photograph celestial objects even in daylight.

Key Features:

  • Enhanced Imaging: By blocking visible light and passing infrared wavelengths above 742 nm, this filter minimizes the part of the spectrum most affected by poor seeing conditions. This results in steadier and sharper images with exposure times similar to those in visible light.
  • Daylight Photography: The darkened sky background during dawn or daylight allows for effective lunar and planetary imaging.
  • Durability: Resistant to humidity, scratches, and aging effects, ensuring long-term usability.
  • Parfocal Design: Compatible with other Astronomik filters without requiring refocusing.

Specifications:

  • Transmission: Over 96% for wavelengths between 742 nm and 1100 nm.
  • Blocking Range: Wavelengths from 350 nm to 730 nm are fully suppressed.
  • Filter Thickness: 1 mm.
  • Material: Aluminum mount with multi-layer coatings for protection.

Applications:

  • Ideal for imaging planets like Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars where infrared wavelengths reveal atmospheric details not visible in standard color imaging.
  • Particularly effective for large telescopes (10" or more) under poor seeing conditions. For telescopes with apertures smaller than 250 mm, the ProPlanet IR 742 is recommended over filters with deeper cut-on wavelengths like the ProPlanet IR 807.

This filter is a valuable tool for astrophotographers aiming to capture high-quality planetary and lunar images while mitigating the effects of atmospheric distortion.
