Calcium K (Ca-K) telescopes and filters are designed for observing the Sun at the 393.4 nm wavelength, which is produced by calcium and lies at the edge of the visible spectrum. This emission line reveals super granulation cells, which are most prominent in regions with strong magnetic fields, such as sunspots and other active solar areas. Studying both the Calcium K and Hydrogen-alpha lines gives astronomers valuable information about the structure and dynamics of solar activity. Because the Ca-K wavelength is near the ultraviolet range, most people cannot see much contrast visually, especially as the eye ages. However, those who have had cataract surgery may see more detail. For this reason, Ca-K systems are primarily used for imaging, where cameras can capture the fine details.

Internal narrowband filters provide a bandpass of less than 2.4 Angstroms, making this system highly effective for detailed solar imaging.
