Sony Camera A6400a Full Range (75028)

The Sony A6400a Full Range is an astromodified version of the Sony A6400 camera, specifically tailored for astrophotography. In standard cameras, a filter is used to block much of the red spectrum to match human color perception in daylight, but this also blocks the important H-alpha spectral line, which is essential for capturing astronomical gas nebulae. Astromodification involves removing or replacing this filter, greatly increasing the camera’s sensitivity to red light, particularly in the H-alpha and SII ranges.

Description

The Sony A6400a Full Range is an astromodified version of the Sony A6400 camera, specifically tailored for astrophotography. In standard cameras, a filter is used to block much of the red spectrum to match human color perception in daylight, but this also blocks the important H-alpha spectral line, which is essential for capturing astronomical gas nebulae. Astromodification involves removing or replacing this filter, greatly increasing the camera’s sensitivity to red light, particularly in the H-alpha and SII ranges. This modification enables the camera to reveal and photograph faint nebulae and other deep-sky objects that are otherwise difficult to capture with a standard camera.

The Sony A6400a Full Range astromodified camera is an excellent choice for astrophotographers who want to capture the full beauty of the night sky, especially faint and extended nebulae, while still retaining the flexibility for everyday and infrared photography with the appropriate filters.

Astromodification Details and Benefits

  • The astromodified Sony A6400a has increased red sensitivity, making it ideal for imaging gas nebulae and other astronomical phenomena that emit strongly in the H-alpha and SII spectral lines.

  • With this modification, the camera can fully utilize its large APS-C sensor to capture wide and detailed views of extended nebulae.

  • The camera remains versatile: it can be used for normal daytime photography, infrared imaging, or specialized astrophotography by adding external filters.

  • The built-in screen with LiveView, compact size, and lack of need for an external computer make it convenient for field use.

  • The camera comes with all standard accessories: camera body, battery, charger, USB cable, and manual.

Types of Astromodification

  • Baader Astromodification: Uses a Baader BCF filter, allowing light from 420–680 nm to reach the sensor, resulting in about four times higher H-alpha sensitivity compared to an unmodified camera.

  • Super UV/IR-Cut Astromodification: Expands the transmission range to 400–700 nm, collecting all visible light.

  • Full Range Astromodification: The camera becomes sensitive to ultraviolet, visible, and infrared light starting from 300 nm, offering maximum flexibility for different types of photography.

Important Notes

  • During the astromodification process, the original packaging is opened and the camera is tested, so the shutter count will not be zero. However, these cameras are not used and are considered new unless otherwise stated.

  • The modification is performed by specialized companies, such as AstroHobby in Italy, who carefully remove or replace the original filter.

  • The modification does not affect the camera’s basic operation or power consumption.
