ZWO ASI585MM – a new generation monochrome planetary camera with Sony Starvis 2™ sensor

ZWO introduces the compact ASI585MM astronomical camera, designed specifically for planetary astrophotography and lunar observation. This model is the direct successor to the popular ASI485MC, offering noticeably higher sensitivity in the visible and near-infrared range (below 850 nm) as well as increased full well capacity. The result is improved dynamic range and greater image detail.

Sony IMX585 sensor – monochrome precision and exceptional sensitivity
At the heart of the camera is the monochrome Sony IMX585 sensor based on the latest Sony Starvis 2™ technology. It delivers extremely high quantum efficiency of up to 91 percent and excellent sensitivity in both the visible and infrared spectrum, while completely eliminating amp glow, a long-standing issue in many CMOS cameras.

Combined with very low read noise, starting at just 0.7 electrons, and a large full well capacity of 38.7 ke⁻, the ASI585MM provides outstanding detail and contrast even at high gain settings or with very short exposure times.

Thanks to a 12-bit ADC, captured images feature a wide dynamic range and smooth tonal transitions, which is essential for imaging planetary surfaces, the Moon, or fine solar details when used with appropriate filters.

Compact design and solid construction
The ASI585MM is housed in a lightweight yet durable anodized aluminum body finished in ZWO’s distinctive red color. With a diameter of 62 mm and a length of just 31 mm, the camera is extremely compact, making it ideal for telescopes with limited back focus and for portable imaging setups.

High speed and stable performance
The camera is equipped with a 256 MB DDR3 memory buffer that ensures stable data transfer even at high frame rates. Using the USB 3.0 interface, the ASI585MM can capture up to 46.9 frames per second at its full 8.29 megapixel resolution of 3840 × 2160 pixels.

This makes it perfectly suited for recording dynamic astronomical events such as planetary detail, surface activity, transits, and short high-resolution sequences.
