Canon continues its tradition of robust, professional workhorse cameras with the EOS 5D Mark IV DSLR. It is an excellent choice for still photography and a very capable 4K video camera. The camera features a newly developed 30.4MP full-frame CMOS sensor combined with the DIGIC 6+ image processor, designed to balance fine detail and high resolution with strong low-light performance and sensitivity. It offers a native ISO range of 100–32000, expandable to 50–102400, delivering sharp, low-noise images in a wide variety of shooting conditions. In addition to improved image quality, users benefit from faster overall performance, an upgraded autofocus system, and built-in Wi-Fi, NFC, and GPS.

To capture detailed images quickly and efficiently, the 5D Mark IV uses the DIGIC 6+ processor to support continuous shooting at up to 7 frames per second. A 150,000-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor evaluates both the scene and subjects to deliver accurate exposure in many different lighting situations. The updated 61-point High Density Reticular AF system enhances the camera’s speed and reliability by locking onto subjects rapidly and precisely, ensuring tack-sharp results. A new AF area selection button provides near-instant access to AF area settings.

Video performance is significantly enhanced by Dual Pixel CMOS AF and Movie Servo AF, which allow smooth, responsive focus transitions during recording. The 3.2" 1.62m-dot touchscreen LCD makes it easy to set focus simply by tapping on the screen. With support for DCI 4K (4096 × 2160) recording at up to 30 fps, users can also capture 8.8MP still frames directly from video footage for an even faster way to grab key moments. Linked to the Dual Pixel sensor design is Canon’s Dual Pixel RAW feature, which gives photographers the ability to fine-tune certain aspects of an image after capture, such as subtle focus shifts and bokeh adjustment.

30.4MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 6+ Processor
The 5D Mark IV continues the 5D series philosophy of combining high resolution with dependable low-light capabilities. The 30.4MP full-frame CMOS sensor increases overall resolution without sacrificing sensitivity. Paired with the DIGIC 6+ processor, it delivers excellent performance throughout the native ISO 100–32000 range, expandable to ISO 50–102400.

Versatility is central to the 5D series, allowing photographers to shoot everything from landscapes to weddings with confidence. The 150,000-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor helps achieve accurate exposure, even in challenging scenes. It also supports face detection and flicker detection, which are especially useful in mixed or artificial lighting. A continuous shooting rate of up to 7 fps makes the camera suitable for events, action, and other fast-paced situations.

High Density Reticular AF and Dual Pixel CMOS AF Systems
For precise subject focus, the 5D Mark IV uses an enhanced High Density Reticular AF system with 61 phase-detection points. All points are sensitive to f/8, and 41 of them are cross-type for improved accuracy. The center AF point is operational down to –3 EV, allowing autofocus in very low light. Compared to earlier models, the AF coverage has been extended vertically by approximately 24% at the edges and 8% in the center, improving subject tracking across the frame.

In Live View and video modes, the camera employs Dual Pixel CMOS AF directly on the image sensor. This provides approximately 80% coverage with phase-detection autofocus for faster, more precise focusing. It is particularly well-suited to video, offering smooth rack focusing without the common drawbacks of contrast-detection AF. The system works seamlessly with the touchscreen interface, letting users simply tap the screen to shift focus.

DCI 4K Video Recording
The 5D Mark IV is designed for both professional still photography and video work. It records DCI 4K (4096 × 2160) video at up to 30 fps and 500 Mbps, Full HD 1080p at up to 60 fps, and HD 720p at 120 fps for slow-motion playback. When recording internally, 4K footage is captured with 4:2:2 sampling and 8-bit color depth, while Full HD 1080p uses 4:2:0 sampling. Uncompressed Full HD 1080p video can be output via HDMI to a compatible external recorder with 4:2:2 color.

4K video is recorded using a central 4096 × 2160 area of the sensor with a 1.74× crop, providing ideal 1:1 pixel sampling. Full HD modes use the full width of the sensor. Audio can be recorded with the built-in stereo microphone or an optional external microphone via the 3.5 mm input. A 3.5 mm headphone jack enables real-time audio monitoring. During 4K playback on the rear touchscreen, users can extract 8.8MP still frames and save them as single images.

Dual Pixel RAW
Debuting on the 5D Mark IV, Dual Pixel RAW records additional image information based on the sensor’s pixel structure. This allows subtle adjustments in post-processing, such as micro focus shifts to emphasize fine details, bokeh repositioning for improved composition, and reduction of ghosting artifacts. These adjustments are performed using Canon’s Digital Photo Professional software.

Body Design
The 5D Mark IV features a 3.2" 1.62m-dot Clear View II LCD with an anti-reflective coating for bright, clear playback and Live View shooting. The touchscreen interface supports touch-to-focus and convenient menu navigation. A dedicated AF mode selection button beneath the rear joystick gives fast access to AF settings.

Dual memory card slots (CompactFlash and SD) allow flexible file management, including overflow recording or separation of file types in-camera. The Intelligent Viewfinder II uses a bright pentaprism design and can display a range of shooting information, including AF points (highlighted in red for low light), electronic level, grid, flicker detection, white balance, metering mode, and other parameters. A Mirror Vibration Control System helps reduce internal vibrations, improving sharpness in long exposures and high-speed bursts. The magnesium alloy body is dust- and weather-sealed, making it suitable for demanding environments.

Other Camera Features
A built-in GPS module lets you geotag your images and synchronize time automatically via satellite systems, including GPS, GLONASS, and Michibiki. Digital Lens Optimizer technology corrects optical flaws such as chromatic aberration, distortion, peripheral brightness falloff, and diffraction. Lens data can be stored in the camera, allowing real-time correction and ready-to-use JPEG files straight out of the camera.

A built-in intervalometer supports time-lapse creation, allowing 1–99 frames at intervals from 1 second to 99 hours 59 minutes 59 seconds, or an unlimited number of frames.
