Description
The Nikon Z f takes its inspiration from the legendary Nikon FM2, a 35mm film camera released in 1982 and loved by professionals and enthusiasts for its solid build, excellent usability, and accessible price. The Z f pays homage to that classic design while packing in advanced, full-frame mirrorless technology for today’s creators.
Full-frame performance
Beyond its vintage looks, the Nikon Z f is built on high-end internals. It builds on the capabilities of the Nikon Z 6II and incorporates technology from the Z 8 and Z 9, plus new features of its own. Powered by the EXPEED 7 processor, it uses a 24.5MP full-frame sensor and offers a maximum ISO of 64,000, making it Nikon’s most powerful and approachable camera for those who love classic Nikon styling.
Advanced autofocus
The Z f features expanded auto-area autofocus that can track small subjects across almost the entire frame. It offers 299 focus points covering approximately 89 × 96% of the image area (compared to 81 points over 80 × 80% on the Z 6II). In custom wide-area AF, it supports 77 selectable patterns for stills and 66 for video, greatly improving subject detection and tracking options.
Backlit autofocus performance
By using dedicated pixels on the sensor for autofocus, the camera can overexpose AF data for better focusing in very dark environments without affecting the final exposure. In low light, autofocus detection works down to –10 EV in stills mode, allowing focusing in extremely dim conditions.
World-first Focus Point VR
The Nikon Z f introduces a new, world-first vibration reduction (VR) system that concentrates stabilisation on the active focus point. Traditional in-body stabilisation works across the entire frame and is most effective around the centre, with less compensation towards the edges. Focus Point VR enhances stabilisation at the subject’s position in the frame, helping keep the main subject sharp even when it’s off-centre.
This function works with non-VR NIKKOR Z lenses and only in stills mode.
Subject detection in manual focus
For photographers who enjoy using older or manual-focus lenses with electronic contacts, the Z f offers subject detection even in manual focus. The camera automatically shifts the focus area to the subject’s eye and can instantly zoom in to help you confirm critical focus.
Premium brass dial controls
The Nikon Z f uses physical dials for exposure compensation, ISO, and shutter speed, evoking the feel of classic film cameras. The shutter release uses a leaf switch mechanism for a traditional tactile response. The brass control dials will naturally develop a patina over time, giving each camera a unique, personalised character.
Dedicated monochrome switch
A physical monochrome switch on the camera body lets you switch to black-and-white shooting instantly, rather than diving into menus. Three monochrome picture styles—Monochrome, Flat Monochrome, and Deep Tone Monochrome—allow you to create expressive black-and-white images straight out of the camera.
Pixel Shift shooting for ultra-high resolution
Using in-body VR, the Z f can perform pixel shift shooting by subtly moving the sensor between exposures while capturing multiple frames. These frames are then combined in compatible editing software to create images with up to four times the standard resolution for incredible detail.
Powerful in-body stabilisation
The Nikon Z f offers up to 8 stops of in-body stabilisation compensation, even surpassing the Z 9 in this area. This helps you shoot handheld in challenging, low-light conditions without sacrificing sharpness.
Low-light confidence
With a maximum ISO of 64,000 for stills (expandable to higher values) and excellent stabilisation, the Z f is built to handle difficult lighting. Starlight View mode brightens the live view display in dark scenes, making it easier to compose and focus at night.
Portrait tools built in
The Z f includes sophisticated portrait controls to help you get flattering and precise results:
-
Rich Tone Portrait preserves skin detail and texture while reducing white clipping.
-
Portrait Impression Balance lets you adjust hue and brightness to create the mood you want.
-
Skin Softening smooths skin while keeping details like eyes and hair sharp.
Flexible viewing with vari-angle screen
A fully articulating monitor makes it easy to compose from almost any angle—high, low, or in front of the camera—perfect for stills, video, and vlogging.
High-speed shooting and Pre-Release Capture
The Nikon Z f can shoot at up to 30 fps in JPEG and up to 14 fps in RAW, helping you capture fast action. With Pre-Release Capture enabled, the camera records up to one second of frames before the shutter is fully pressed, giving you a better chance of capturing the decisive moment.
Smarter Auto mode with Deep Learning
Using Deep Learning technology, the camera’s Auto mode intelligently determines exposure and other parameters across a wide range of situations, including moving subjects, night portraits, group shots, and more, making it easier to get great results straight away.
Built to last
Like Nikon’s classic cameras, the Z f is designed for durability and reliability. The body is constructed from magnesium alloy and features dust and drip resistance similar to the Nikon Z 8. The sensor also features cleaning and protective coatings comparable to those used in the Z 9. With an operating temperature rating down to 0°C, the Z f is ready for everyday use and demanding conditions alike.
Seven body colour options
In addition to a classic all-black finish, the Nikon Z f is available in six additional colours: Indigo Blue, Sunset Orange, Sepia Brown, Moss Green, Bordeaux Red, and Stone Grey. This lets you choose a look that matches your personal style.
Enhanced touch control
For the first time on a Nikon Z camera, the rear monitor supports nine customisable touch areas. You can assign actions such as moving the focus point, switching between a subject’s eyes, toggling the framing grid, zooming in or out, displaying the virtual horizon, and more—simply by tapping the screen, even while your eye is at the viewfinder.
