The Nikon Z 5 is a compact FX-format mirrorless camera designed to perform well for both still photography and video. It features a 24.3 MP CMOS sensor paired with the EXPEED 6 image processor, offering a wide ISO range up to 51200, continuous shooting at 4.5 fps, and UHD 4K video recording at 30 fps.

Its imaging capabilities are supported by a refined hybrid autofocus system with 273 selectable points. This AF system uses both phase-detection and contrast-detection for fast, accurate focusing and reliable subject tracking. Face Detection works in both stills and video, while Eye Detection provides precise focus for portrait photographers capturing humans or animals.

The camera’s construction complements its performance. It uses a magnesium alloy chassis with weather sealing, making it suitable for use in challenging environments. A 3.6-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder offers a sharp, high-resolution view, while the 3.2" tilting touchscreen LCD with 1.04 million dots supports comfortable shooting from high and low angles. For wireless convenience, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth work with the Nikon SnapBridge app, allowing you to transfer photos and videos or control the camera remotely from a smart device.

24.3 MP FX-format sensor and EXPEED 6 processor

The full-frame 24.3 MP CMOS sensor combines with the EXPEED 6 processor to deliver high sensitivity, detailed images, and fast performance. The native ISO range of 100–51200 can be expanded to ISO 102400 for very low-light conditions. This combination produces clean images with smooth color tones and reduced noise across the sensitivity range.

The EXPEED 6 processor also supports full-resolution continuous shooting at 4.5 frames per second and enables 8 MP frame grabs during video recording.

The sensor includes a 273-point hybrid autofocus system using both phase-detection and contrast-detection technologies. Eye Detection AF keeps focus locked on a subject’s eyes, and Face Detection works for both humans and animals in stills and video.

UHD 4K video recording

The Z 5 is designed to handle video as confidently as photos. It supports UHD 4K recording at up to 30 fps and Full HD recording at up to 60 fps. Video files can be saved internally to SD cards or sent to an external recorder via HDMI. UHD 4K uses a 1.7x crop of the sensor, while Full HD uses the entire full-frame area. The camera also supports in-camera time-lapse shooting and can create a finished 4K time-lapse movie internally.

Sensor-shift Vibration Reduction

A 5-axis sensor-shift Vibration Reduction (VR) system is built into the camera body, providing up to five stops of stabilization regardless of the lens used. When using adapted F-mount lenses via the optional FTZ adapter, 3-axis stabilization is applied. Electronic VR can also be activated for video recording to further steady handheld footage.
