Description

The Nikon Z6 II is a fast, flexible full-frame mirrorless camera built for demanding photo and video work. It keeps the proven handling and image quality of the original Z6, but adds more speed, better autofocus, stronger video options, and a more versatile storage setup to suit modern multimedia creators.

At its core is a 24.5 MP back-illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor paired with dual EXPEED 6 image processors. This combination delivers a deeper buffer and faster continuous shooting—up to 14 fps with single-point AF or 12 fps with other AF modes. The camera records UHD 4K video at up to 30p (and higher with firmware), or Full HD up to 120p for smooth slow motion. The sensor supports a wide ISO range of 100–51,200 for stills, and 5‑axis in-body Vibration Reduction helps keep handheld shots sharp. A 273-point phase-detection AF system covers most of the frame and supports Eye-Detection AF in Wide-Area AF and during movie recording, with focusing possible down to –4.5 EV in low light.

Physically, the Z6 II keeps the same comfortable body shape, but adds a dual card slot configuration: one CFexpress Type B (or XQD) slot and one SD UHS-II slot for flexible file management. A 3.6M-dot OLED electronic viewfinder and a 3.2" 2.1M-dot tilting touchscreen LCD make composing and reviewing images easy, and built-in SnapBridge connectivity supports wireless image transfer, remote control, and firmware updates via a smart device.

Firmware version 1.10 adds UHD 4K 60p and 50p recording, enables raw video output to Blackmagic Design Video Assist recorders, and improves eye-detection AF when using Auto-Area AF and Wide-Area AF.

Second-Generation Improvements

Nikon has refined the original Z6 platform to deliver greater speed, responsiveness, and flexibility while preserving the camera’s familiar strengths.

  • Dual EXPEED 6 processors provide a faster 14 fps continuous shooting rate, improved buffer performance, and reduced viewfinder blackout.

  • Updated AF now includes Eye and Face Detection for humans and animals in Wide-Area AF, for both stills and video.

  • Timed long exposures can now be set up to 900 seconds (15 minutes) without an external remote.

  • Dual memory card slots: one CFexpress Type B/XQD and one SD UHS-II, supporting overflow, backup, or separate file storage.

  • USB Type-C port supports in-camera battery charging and continuous power for long sessions.

  • Focus ring rotation direction can be reversed on compatible lenses to match user preference.

  • HDR (HLG) output over HDMI gives ready-to-view HDR footage for compatible displays, while N-Log offers a flat profile for flexible colour grading.

  • Eligible for a ProRes RAW upgrade (optional), enabling 12‑bit ProRes RAW output over HDMI to compatible Atomos recorders for advanced grading control.

  • SnapBridge can be used to update the camera’s firmware wirelessly, removing reliance on memory cards for updates.

  • Creative options include Multiple Exposure, 20 Picture Controls, in-camera time-lapse creation, and Focus Shift shooting (up to 300 frames) for focus stacking.

  • Compatible with the optional MB‑N11 Power Battery Pack, which extends battery life and improves handling, especially in vertical orientation.

24.5 MP FX-Format BSI CMOS Sensor and Dual EXPEED 6 Processors

The 24.5 MP full-frame BSI CMOS sensor is designed for all-purpose shooting, delivering strong low-light performance and fast readout for continuous shooting, video, and time-lapse work. The back-illuminated structure helps produce clean images at high ISOs, up to a native ISO 51,200, and maintains smooth, vivid image quality down to ISO 100.

Dual EXPEED 6 processors drive the camera’s speed, enabling continuous shooting up to 14 fps for as many as 124 consecutive frames, along with responsive operation throughout the system.

UHD 4K Video Capabilities

The Z6 II is built for serious video as well as stills:

  • UHD 4K recording with full pixel readout up to 30p.

  • Full HD 1080p recording up to 120p for detailed slow-motion footage.

  • Footage can be saved internally to the memory cards or sent as an uncompressed feed via HDMI to an external recorder.

Advanced video tools include:

  • N‑Log gamma for flat, high dynamic range footage suited to post-production grading.

  • HLG (HDR) recording for HDR-ready output.

  • 10‑bit output over HDMI for improved colour depth with external recorders.

  • Electronic VR for smoother handheld video.

  • Focus Peaking for more precise manual focus.

  • Zebra display to highlight overexposed areas.

Audio is recorded via the built-in stereo microphone or via an external mic connected through the 3.5 mm input. A headphone jack allows real-time audio monitoring.

Firmware version 1.10 enables UHD 4K 60p and 50p output and adds raw video output support to Blackmagic Design Video Assist recorders while improving eye-detection AF in Auto-Area and Wide-Area AF modes.

273-Point Phase-Detect AF System

On-sensor phase-detection AF uses 273 focus points covering about 90% of the frame, both horizontally and vertically. This wide coverage delivers fast, reliable focus for stills and video and supports subject tracking close to the frame edges.

For video, Hybrid AF seamlessly shifts between phase-detection and contrast-detection systems for smooth, natural focus transitions. NIKKOR Z lenses are optimized for quiet operation, making AF changes less distracting in recorded audio.

In-Body Vibration Reduction

A 5‑axis sensor-shift Vibration Reduction system is built into the camera body, compensating for up to 5 stops of camera shake with Z-mount lenses. When using adapted F-mount lenses via the FTZ adapter, 3‑axis stabilization is available, still providing useful shake reduction for handheld shooting.

Body Design and Handling

  • A 3.2" 2.1M-dot tilting LCD provides a bright, sharp display for live view and playback, and supports touch control for menu navigation, focus selection, and more.

  • The 3.6M-dot OLED EVF offers a high 0.80× magnification, detailed viewing, and uses NIKKOR optics for clarity. A fluorine coating makes the viewfinder easier to clean.

  • A top-panel dot-matrix OLED display provides quick access to key shooting settings at a glance.

  • Dual card slots (one CFexpress Type B/XQD, one SD UHS-II) support flexible storage setups such as overflow, backup, or segregating stills and video.

  • The magnesium alloy body is dust- and weather-resistant, suitable for use in challenging environments.

  • An ergonomic grip and thoughtfully shaped body help maintain comfort during extended shoots, aided by an anti-slip finish and a joystick for quick AF point and settings selection.

  • Built-in Bluetooth Low Energy and Wi‑Fi via SnapBridge allow wireless image transfer, remote shooting, live view on a smart device, and easier firmware updates without using a memory card.

Nikon Z6 II Firmware Version 1.30 (Released 19 October 2021)

This firmware update adds and improves several features:

  • Portrait Impression Balance options added to the Photo Shooting Menu and Movie Shooting Menu for refined control over skin tones and portrait rendering.

  • When the monitor is tilted and Image review is set to “On,” the shooting display is now shown during playback for more seamless operation.

  • Voice memo added as an assignable function for the Movie Record button in Custom Setting f2 (Custom controls). The button can be used during playback to record and play voice memos up to 60 seconds long.

  • Custom Setting f4 (Aperture lock) is now available when an FTZ mount adapter is attached.

  • The flash-ready light on SB‑5000 units now lights when a WR‑R10 or WR‑R11b is used for wireless remote flash operation.

  • Fixes an issue where focus might unexpectedly change during continuous shooting when AF-ON only was selected for AF activation and Out-of-focus release was enabled, under certain AF mode and release mode combinations.

NIKKOR Z 24–120mm f/4 S Lens (Kit Lens)

The NIKKOR Z 24–120mm f/4 S is a highly versatile zoom lens covering wide-angle to short-telephoto focal lengths, making it suitable for landscapes, travel, events, portraits, and general everyday use. A constant f/4 maximum aperture maintains consistent exposure throughout the zoom range, and an advanced optical design delivers sharpness and clarity across the frame. Despite its wide zoom range, the lens remains relatively compact and lightweight, ideal as a go-to option for many shooting situations.

Optical Design

  • The optical formula includes three ED elements, one aspherical ED element, and three aspherical elements to effectively correct chromatic and spherical aberrations, resulting in sharp, clear images throughout the zoom range.

  • Nano Crystal Coat and ARNEO Coat are applied to reduce flare, reflections, and ghosting when shooting into strong light or backlit scenes. Nano Crystal Coat primarily handles diagonal stray light, while ARNEO Coat deals with vertical stray light.

Autofocus and Close Focusing

  • A multi-focus system uses two synchronized AF drive units for fast, accurate focusing throughout the zoom range.

  • Stepping motors deliver smooth and quiet autofocus, ideal for both still photography and video work.

  • Full-time manual focus override lets you fine-tune focus at any time.

  • Internal focusing ensures the overall lens length does not change during focusing, improving handling and AF speed.

  • A dedicated manual focus ring at the rear of the lens provides precise tactile control over focus.

  • A minimum focus distance of 1.1 ft (35 cm) and a maximum magnification ratio of 0.39× allow detailed close-up shooting.

Handling and Features

  • A programmable control ring can be assigned to functions such as aperture, ISO, or exposure compensation for direct, silent adjustments.

  • An L.Fn button on the lens works alongside the camera’s function buttons to provide quick access to commonly used settings.

  • The lens barrel is sealed against dust and moisture, and the front element has a fluorine coating to repel dirt and make cleaning easier.
