Description

The Nikon Z6 II is a fast, flexible full‑frame mirrorless camera built for advanced photography and video. It takes the popular Z6 design and improves speed, autofocus, and workflow features while keeping the same comfortable body and excellent image quality.

Powered by a 24.5 MP back‑illuminated CMOS sensor and dual EXPEED 6 processors, the Z6 II offers a deeper buffer and faster continuous shooting: up to 14 fps with single‑point AF and up to 12 fps in other AF modes. It records UHD 4K video up to 30p or Full HD up to 120p for smooth slow‑motion playback. The wide ISO range (100–51,200, expandable) suits many lighting conditions, and the in‑body 5‑axis Vibration Reduction system helps keep handheld shots sharp.

The sensor also includes a 273‑point phase‑detection autofocus system that covers most of the frame. Eye‑Detection AF works in Wide‑Area AF modes and during video recording, and AF can operate in very low light down to approximately –4.5 EV.

The body keeps the same rugged, compact design as the original Z6 but adds a dual card slot system: one CFexpress Type B (or XQD) slot and one SD UHS‑II slot for flexible storage (backup, overflow, or split file types). A 3.6M‑dot OLED electronic viewfinder and a 3.2" 2.1M‑dot tilting touchscreen LCD provide clear viewing and easy control. Built‑in SnapBridge wireless connectivity supports remote shooting, image transfer to a smart device, and wireless firmware updates.

Firmware version 1.10 adds UHD 4K 60p and 50p recording, enables raw video output to Blackmagic Design Video Assist external recorders, and improves eye‑detection AF in Auto‑Area and Wide‑Area AF modes.

Second‑Generation Z Enhancements

Nikon has refined the Z6 platform to be faster and more capable without losing what users liked about the original model.

  • Dual EXPEED 6 processors increase buffer performance, allow up to 14 fps continuous shooting, and reduce viewfinder blackout.

  • Updated autofocus adds Eye and Face Detection for humans and animals in Wide‑Area AF, for both still images and movies.

  • Timed long exposures up to 900 seconds (15 minutes) are now possible without an external remote release.

  • Dual card slots (one CFexpress Type B and one SD UHS‑II) allow overflow, backup, or separated storage of different file types.

  • USB Type‑C supports in‑camera battery charging and continuous power for long sessions.

  • Lens focus ring direction can be reversed for users who prefer an alternative rotation.

  • HDR (HLG) output over HDMI creates HDR‑ready video for compatible displays; N‑Log is also available for footage intended for colour grading.

  • Optional ProRes RAW upgrade allows 12‑bit ProRes RAW output to supported Atomos recorders, offering maximum grading flexibility.

  • SnapBridge can be used to update camera firmware using a smart device instead of a memory card.

  • Creative features include Multiple Exposure, 20 Picture Control profiles, built‑in time‑lapse creation, and Focus Shift shooting (up to 300 frames) for focus stacking.

  • Compatible with the optional MB‑N11 Power Battery Pack for extended shooting and improved handling, especially in vertical orientation.

24.5 MP FX‑Format BSI CMOS Sensor and Dual EXPEED 6 Processors

The 24.5 MP full‑frame back‑illuminated CMOS sensor is designed for all‑purpose use. It delivers clean images at high ISO values and smooth tonal gradation, making it suitable for both stills and video. The native ISO range is 100–51,200, with expansion available for even more flexibility.

Dual EXPEED 6 processors drive overall performance, supporting continuous shooting at up to 14 frames per second for up to 124 consecutive images, while maintaining responsive operation for both photo and movie work.

UHD 4K Video and Advanced Movie Features

The Z6 II is a strong hybrid camera with extensive video capabilities:

  • UHD 4K (3840 × 2160) recording with full pixel readout up to 30p.

  • Full HD (1920 × 1080) recording up to 120p for detailed slow‑motion footage.

  • Files can be recorded internally or output as an uncompressed signal via HDMI to an external recorder.

Additional video tools include:

  • N‑Log gamma for flat, high‑dynamic‑range footage optimised for colour grading.

  • HLG (HDR) recording for HDR‑ready output.

  • 10‑bit output over HDMI for greater colour depth with external recorders.

  • Electronic VR for smoother handheld video.

  • Focus Peaking to assist manual focusing.

  • Zebra display to identify potential overexposed areas.

Sound can be captured with the built‑in stereo microphone or an external mic connected via the 3.5 mm input. A 3.5 mm headphone output allows live audio monitoring while recording.

Firmware version 1.10 also adds UHD 4K 60p and 50p recording, enables raw video output to Blackmagic Design Video Assist devices, and gives more reliable eye‑detection AF in Auto‑Area and Wide‑Area AF.

273‑Point Phase‑Detect AF System

The image sensor includes 273 phase‑detection autofocus points covering about 90% of the frame in both directions. This wide coverage supports fast, accurate focusing for both photos and movies and maintains subject tracking almost to the frame edges.

Hybrid AF for video blends phase‑detect and contrast‑detect methods to keep transitions smooth and natural. NIKKOR Z lenses are optimised for quiet, precise focusing, which is especially useful during video recording.

5‑Axis In‑Body Vibration Reduction

The Z6 II uses 5‑axis sensor‑shift Vibration Reduction to compensate for camera shake by up to 5 stops when using Z‑mount lenses. With F‑mount lenses attached via the optional FTZ adapter, 3‑axis stabilization is still available. This helps when shooting handheld in low light or at slower shutter speeds.

Body Design and Connectivity

  • 3.2" 2.1M‑dot tilting LCD touchscreen for bright live view and clear playback, with intuitive touch controls for settings and focus.

  • 3.6M‑dot OLED electronic viewfinder with 0.8× magnification, high resolution and contrast, and NIKKOR optics for a sharp, comfortable view. A fluorine coating helps keep the eyepiece clean.

  • Top‑panel dot‑matrix OLED status display for at‑a‑glance viewing of key camera settings.

  • One CFexpress Type B/XQD slot and one SD UHS‑II slot for flexible media management (backup, overflow, or split file types).

  • Strong magnesium alloy body with dust and weather sealing for reliable use in harsh conditions.

  • Deep, comfortable grip and ergonomically placed controls for long shooting sessions, including a joystick for quick AF area and menu navigation.

  • Built‑in Bluetooth Low Energy and Wi‑Fi with SnapBridge support for remote control, wireless file transfer, and simplified firmware updates.

Z6 II Firmware Version 1.30 (Released 19 October 2021)

This firmware update adds new options and fixes several issues:

  • Portrait Impression Balance added to both the Photo Shooting Menu and Movie Shooting Menu for more refined portrait adjustment.

  • When Image Review is set to “On” and the monitor is tilted, the shooting display remains visible for smoother operation.

  • Voice memo can be assigned to the Movie Record button through Custom Setting f2 (Custom controls). During playback, this button can be used to record and play voice memos up to 60 seconds long.

  • Custom Setting f4 (Aperture lock) is now available when using an FTZ mount adapter.

  • The flash‑ready lamp on SB‑5000 Speedlights lights when a WR‑R10 or WR‑R11b is used for wireless remote flash photography.

  • Fix for an issue where focus could change unexpectedly during a continuous burst when AF‑ON only was set for AF activation and Out‑of‑focus release was enabled in specific AF and release modes.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 24–200mm f/4–6.3 VR Lens

The NIKKOR Z 24–200mm f/4–6.3 VR is a versatile 8.3× zoom lens designed as a single‑lens solution for many shooting situations. It covers focal lengths from wide‑angle to telephoto and is ideal for travel, everyday use, and mixed photo and video work.

An advanced optical design, featuring aspherical and extra‑low dispersion elements, helps maintain sharpness and reduce distortion and colour fringing across the zoom range. ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coats, combined with a Super Integrated Coating, suppress flare and ghosting for high contrast and accurate colour, even in strong or backlit conditions.

Vibration Reduction image stabilization compensates for camera shake by up to about 5 stops, making handheld shooting more reliable at slower shutter speeds or longer focal lengths. A stepping motor delivers fast, quiet, and precise autofocus, with full‑time manual focus override. An internal focusing design keeps the physical length stable while focusing, improving handling and balance.

The lens includes a programmable control ring, which by default adjusts manual focus but can be assigned to settings such as aperture or exposure compensation. A seven‑blade rounded diaphragm helps produce smooth, pleasing background blur. The dust‑ and moisture‑resistant construction supports use in challenging weather.

Key lens characteristics:

  • All‑in‑one zoom for FX‑format Z‑mount cameras, also suitable for DX bodies with an approximate 36–300 mm equivalent range.

  • Two aspherical elements and one aspherical ED element to reduce distortion and spherical aberrations.

  • Two ED elements to minimise chromatic aberration and colour fringing.

  • ARNEO Coat and Nano Crystal Coat to control reflections from different angles, plus Super Integrated Coating on multiple elements for consistent colour.

  • Smooth, quiet stepping motor AF with full‑time manual override and internal focusing.

  • Vibration Reduction for up to approximately 5 stops of shake reduction.

  • Programmable Control Ring for focus or exposure settings.

  • Electromagnetic aperture mechanism for stable exposure during continuous shooting.

  • Seven‑blade rounded diaphragm for attractive bokeh.

  • Dust‑ and moisture‑resistant barrel design.
