Description
The Nikon Z 6II is a versatile, high-performance full-frame mirrorless camera designed for demanding photo and video work. It builds on the original Z 6 by adding more speed, improved autofocus, and greater flexibility, while keeping the same proven ergonomics and image quality that many photographers already appreciate.
At its core is a 24.5 MP back-illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor paired with dual EXPEED 6 image processors. This combination delivers faster continuous shooting, deeper buffer performance, and excellent low-light image quality. The camera can shoot at up to 14 frames per second with single-point AF, or 12 frames per second in other AF modes. For video, it records UHD 4K at up to 30p and Full HD at up to 120p for smooth slow-motion footage. External recording supports 10-bit output with N-Log and HLG (HDR) profiles.
The native ISO range of 100–51200 (expandable in extended modes) makes it suitable for a wide variety of lighting conditions. In-body 5-axis Vibration Reduction helps keep handheld shots sharp by compensating for camera shake. The on-sensor 273-point phase-detection AF system now includes Eye-Detect AF in Wide-Area AF modes and during movie recording, and can focus in low light down to -4.5 EV.
The Z 6II retains the familiar Z-series body design but adds a dual card slot configuration: one CFexpress Type B (or XQD) slot and one SD UHS-II slot for flexible storage and backup options. A 3.6-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder and a 3.2-inch 2.1-million-dot tilting touchscreen LCD provide clear, flexible viewing for shooting and playback. Built-in SnapBridge connectivity (Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi) enables remote control, image transfer to a smart device, and convenient over-the-air firmware updates.
Second-Generation Z Enhancements
-
Dual EXPEED 6 image processors provide faster overall performance, a 14 fps continuous shooting rate, improved buffer depth, and reduced viewfinder blackout.
-
Updated autofocus adds Eye and Face Detection for humans and animals in Wide-Area AF modes, for both stills and video.
-
Timed long exposures are now possible for up to 900 seconds (15 minutes) without needing an external remote.
-
Dual memory card slots (one CFexpress Type B and one SD UHS-II) support overflow, backup, or segregated file saving options.
-
The USB Type-C port supports in-camera battery charging and continuous power for extended shooting sessions.
-
The focus ring rotation direction on compatible lenses can be reversed to match user preference.
-
Support for HDR (HLG) video when recording to an external device provides HDR-ready files for immediate playback; N‑Log is also available for flexible color grading in post-production.
-
A future firmware update (planned at launch) adds UHD 4K 60p recording in addition to the existing 30p frame rate.
-
The camera is eligible for an optional ProRes RAW upgrade, enabling 12-bit ProRes RAW output over HDMI to compatible Atomos recorders. This offers greater flexibility for color grading and uncompressed raw workflows; this upgrade was scheduled to be available from early 2021.
-
SnapBridge connectivity can be used to update the camera’s firmware wirelessly, avoiding the need for card-based updates.
-
Creative modes include Multiple Exposure, 20 Picture Control settings, in-camera Timelapse, and Focus Shift shooting for up to 300 frames with varying focus positions for focus stacking.
-
Compatible with the optional MB‑N11 Power Battery Pack for extended battery life and improved vertical handling.
24.5 MP FX-Format BSI CMOS Sensor and Dual EXPEED 6 Processors
The 24.5 MP full-frame BSI CMOS sensor is designed for all-around use, with excellent low-light performance and fast readout speeds for continuous shooting, video, and time-lapse work. The back-illuminated design reduces noise at high ISO values while maintaining color and detail, with native ISO settings from 100 to 51200 and clean performance across the range.
Dual EXPEED 6 processors provide high-speed operation throughout the camera system, including continuous shooting at up to 14 fps for up to 124 consecutive frames, depending on settings and file type.
UHD 4K Video and Multimedia Capabilities
The Z 6II is a capable hybrid camera for both stills and video:
-
UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) recording up to 30p with full-pixel readout.
-
Full HD (1080p) recording up to 120p for smooth slow-motion playback.
-
Video can be recorded internally to memory cards or externally via HDMI as an uncompressed signal.
-
N‑Log gamma is available for capturing flat, high-dynamic-range footage ideal for grading.
-
HLG (HDR) recording produces HDR-ready footage suitable for compatible displays.
-
10-bit output over HDMI provides higher color precision when recording externally.
-
Electronic VR (electronic image stabilization) helps smooth handheld footage.
-
Focus Peaking assists manual focusing by highlighting in-focus edges.
-
Zebra Stripes help identify overexposed areas in the frame.
-
Audio can be captured with the built-in stereo microphone or an external mic via the 3.5 mm input. A headphone jack allows real-time audio monitoring, and audio can be recorded in AAC or Linear PCM formats.
273-Point Phase-Detect AF System
An array of 273 phase-detect autofocus points is built into the sensor and covers approximately 90% of the frame vertically and horizontally. This wide coverage provides fast, accurate AF performance across most of the image area for both stills and video. Hybrid AF automatically switches between phase- and contrast-detection for smooth, reliable focusing during movie recording. NIKKOR Z lenses are optimized for fast, quiet focusing, which is especially useful for video.
In-Body Vibration Reduction
The in-body 5-axis sensor-shift Vibration Reduction system compensates for up to 5 stops of camera shake, regardless of the Z-mount lens in use. When using adapted F-mount lenses via the optional FTZ adapter, the system provides 3-axis stabilization, helping to keep images sharp and video footage stable.
Body Design and Handling
-
The 3.2-inch, 2.1-million-dot tilting touchscreen LCD offers bright, detailed viewing for shooting and playback, and supports touch control for menus, focus, and navigation.
-
A 3.6-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder with 0.80x magnification and NIKKOR optics provides a sharp, clear eye-level view. The EVF has a fluorine coating for easier cleaning.
-
A top-panel dot-matrix OLED display shows key shooting information at a glance with minimal power consumption.
-
The camera has two card slots: one CFexpress Type B/XQD slot and one UHS-II SD slot for flexible file management.
-
The robust magnesium-alloy body is dust- and weather-sealed for reliability in challenging environments.
-
An ergonomic grip, anti-slip surfaces, and an integrated joystick make the camera comfortable to hold and easy to operate for long periods.
-
Built-in SnapBridge connectivity, with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and Wi‑Fi, allows for quick transfer of low-resolution images, remote shooting from a smart device, live view display on the device, and wireless firmware updates.
