The Nikon Z 6II is a faster, more versatile version of Nikon’s all-round full-frame mirrorless camera, built for serious photo and video work. It adds performance and feature upgrades while keeping the well-known handling and image quality that many creators already rely on.

At the heart of the camera is a 24.5 MP BSI CMOS sensor paired with dual EXPEED 6 image processors. This combination delivers a deeper buffer and higher continuous shooting speeds: up to 14 frames per second with single-point autofocus, or up to 12 frames per second in other AF modes. For video, the camera can record UHD 4K at 30p and Full HD at up to 120p for smooth slow-motion footage. When using an external recorder, it supports 10-bit output along with N-Log and HLG (HDR) for greater flexibility in grading and HDR workflows.

The sensor’s native ISO range of 100–51200 allows work in a wide variety of lighting conditions, and in-body 5-axis Vibration Reduction helps reduce camera shake for sharper handheld shots. The camera also uses a 273-point phase-detection AF system built into the sensor, now supporting Eye-Detect AF in Wide-Area AF modes and during movie recording, with reliable focusing in low light down to -4.5 EV.

In terms of handling, the Z 6II keeps the familiar Z-series body design but introduces a dual card slot system: one CFexpress Type B card slot and one SD UHS-II card slot for flexible storage, backup, and file separation options. A 3.6-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder and a 3.2-inch 2.1-million-dot tilting touchscreen LCD provide versatile viewing and control for both shooting and playback. SnapBridge wireless connectivity allows remote shooting, image transfer to a smart device, and wireless firmware updates.

Second-generation Z improvements

• Dual EXPEED 6 processors provide faster processing, improved buffer performance, a top continuous shooting speed of 14 fps, and shorter viewfinder blackout times.

• Updated autofocus adds Eye and Face Detection for humans and animals in Wide-Area AF mode, available for both stills and video.

• Timed long exposures are now possible up to 900 seconds (15 minutes) without needing an external remote release.

• Dual memory card slots (one CFexpress Type B and one SD UHS-II) allow flexible file management, including overflow, backup, and separated storage for different file types.

• The camera can be optionally upgraded for ProRes RAW output, enabling it to send 12-bit ProRes RAW footage to a compatible Atomos recorder over HDMI. This offers greater flexibility for color grading and a high-quality raw workflow.

• SnapBridge connectivity can be used to update firmware wirelessly, removing the need to perform updates via memory cards.

• Creative shooting options include Multiple Exposure, 20 Picture Control presets, in-camera Timelapse, and Focus Shift shooting for up to 300 images with shifting focus positions for focus stacking.

24.5 MP FX-format BSI CMOS sensor and dual EXPEED 6 processors

The 24.5 MP full-frame back-illuminated CMOS sensor is designed for general-purpose use, offering excellent low-light performance and fast readout for continuous shooting, video, and time-lapse work. The back-illuminated architecture produces clean images with reduced noise at high ISO settings (up to a native ISO 51200), while still delivering smooth, detailed output at ISO 100.

Working together with the sensor, the dual EXPEED 6 processors provide high-speed operation throughout the camera, supporting continuous shooting up to 14 fps for as many as 124 consecutive frames, depending on file type and settings.

UHD 4K video and advanced recording options

The Z 6II is designed as a capable hybrid camera for both stills and motion:

273-point phase-detect autofocus system

An array of 273 phase-detection autofocus points is integrated on the image sensor, covering approximately 90% of the frame both horizontally and vertically. This wide coverage allows fast, accurate focusing for still images and video and keeps subject tracking effective almost to the edges of the image area.

For video, Hybrid AF automatically switches between phase- and contrast-detection methods to maintain smooth, consistent focus performance. Current NIKKOR Z lenses are optimized for silent, smooth focusing, which is particularly useful for video recording.

In-body Vibration Reduction

The 5-axis sensor-shift Vibration Reduction system inside the camera compensates for up to 5 stops of camera shake, helping keep handheld photos and videos sharp, regardless of which Z-mount lens is attached. When F-mount lenses are used with the optional FTZ adapter, the system provides 3-axis stabilization for improved steadiness.

Body design and handling

• A 3.2-inch tilting touchscreen LCD with 2.1-million-dot resolution offers bright, detailed viewing for live view shooting and playback. The tilting design makes it easier to shoot from high and low angles, while touch control simplifies navigation and operation.

• A 3.6-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder provides comfortable eye-level viewing with approximately 0.80x magnification and NIKKOR optics for a sharp, clear image. The EVF also features a fluorine coating for easier cleaning.
