The Nikon Z 7 is built around the idea of capturing more light. More light means more detail, faster performance and more creative options. The Z 7 combines a lightweight mirrorless body, a revolutionary full-frame Z mount with matched lenses, a Nikon-designed 45.7 MP sensor and full compatibility with Nikon’s DSLR ecosystem, including many of your favourite NIKKOR F-mount lenses (via adapter). Autofocus and Tracking

The Z 7 features 493 on-sensor phase-detection AF points covering approximately 90% of the image area horizontally and vertically. Subjects are quickly acquired as soon as they enter the frame and tracked confidently right out to the edges.

A new hybrid AF system uses an algorithm optimized for the FX-format sensor. The camera automatically switches between focal-plane phase-detection AF and contrast-detection AF to fine-tune focus. The phase-detection pixels on the sensor are arranged to preserve light transmission, delivering accurate AF even in dim conditions.

Subject Tracking

Auto-area AF smoothly tracks subjects whether you are shooting through the electronic viewfinder or using the rear LCD. When shooting portraits, the system also considers the subject’s upper body, helping to maintain focus even if they turn away briefly or move outside the frame.

The latest subject tracking performance is available when the camera is updated to Firmware 3.0.

Eye-Detection AF

Eye-Detection AF locks focus on your subject’s eye in both AF-S (single) and AF-C (continuous) modes, which is particularly useful when the subject is moving or changing pose. It can recognize and track the eyes of multiple people in the frame, letting you choose which person and eye to prioritize, and it can remain locked even when eyes are partially or temporarily obscured.

Animal Detection AF

The camera can detect a dog’s or cat’s eye for still shooting, even in scenes that are often challenging for traditional auto-area AF. When recording video, the camera can detect a dog’s or cat’s face for more reliable focusing.

Electronic Viewfinder and Info Display

The Z 7 is equipped with a 3.6M-dot Quad VGA electronic viewfinder that offers an outstanding viewing experience. A high-resolution display, combined with Nikon optics including aspherical elements and fluorine coating, provides corner-to-corner clarity, sharp magnification, minimal lag and minimal blackout. You get a view that feels similar to an optical finder but with the advantages of an EVF, for both stills and video.

A new icon-based information display keeps critical shooting data visible but out of the way. A customizable menu appears directly in the viewfinder, letting you adjust settings such as focus modes, white balance, exposure settings, VR, Picture Controls, and more without taking your eye away from the scene. You can preview exposure, white balance, stabilization and depth of field in real time—and even review captured images and video in the EVF.

In-Body Image Stabilization (VR)

Powerful 5-axis in-body VR image stabilization is applied to any NIKKOR Z lens you mount. The system provides up to 5 stops of compensation (in up to five directions: yaw, pitch, roll, X and Y). When recording video, optical VR can be combined with electronic VR (e-VR) for even more stable footage. Normal VR mode is optimized for static subjects, while Sports VR is tailored for moving subjects.

VR with F-Mount Lenses

For the first time, many F-mount NIKKOR lenses can benefit from in-body 3-axis VR when used via the optional FTZ mount adapter. Lenses that already have optical VR gain the added advantage of roll-axis stabilization for a total of three axes. Simply attach the FTZ adapter, mount your F-mount lens and you can take advantage of in-body stabilization.

Video Capabilities

The Z 7 captures cinematic 16:9 4K UHD/30p video using the full width and resolution of its backside-illuminated sensor. You get clean output at high ISO settings and no crop factor when using full-frame NIKKOR Z or F-mount lenses. In DX mode, the camera uses full-pixel readout for extra-sharp 4K footage with detail equivalent to 5K. Focus peaking is available for both 4K and 1080p recording, and you can capture 8 MP still images while recording video.

Time-Lapse and N-Log

The Z 7 is highly capable for time-lapse work. Using the interval timer, you can capture up to 9,999 full-resolution still images with no shutter shock, then assemble them into an 8K time-lapse sequence using third-party software. In-camera, you can also create 4K time-lapse movies with exposure smoothing and an extended low-light metering range, ideal for star trails and light painting.

N-Log and View Assist

Nikon’s N-Log format records up to 12 stops of dynamic range, preserving detail in shadows and highlights for flexible color grading in post-production. View Assist can be enabled to apply simple gradation compensation while recording, making it easier to judge exposure and focus and to visualize the final look on the camera’s monitor.

Nikon N-Log 3D LUT

When recording 10-bit N-Log footage, you can apply Nikon’s N-Log 3D LUT in your editing software to quickly recreate Nikon’s characteristic color accuracy in the Rec. 709 color space. The LUT is designed for popular grading applications and allows precise control of brightness, saturation and hue.

Z Mount Lens System

The Z mount has an internal diameter 17% larger than the Nikon F mount and is wider than any other full-frame mount at launch. This larger mount, combined with a short flange distance and large image sensor, transforms what is possible in lens design. Benefits include better low-light performance, more even illumination from center to corners, extremely wide maximum apertures (down to f/0.95) and faster communication between camera and lens.

NIKKOR Z 24–70mm f/4 S Lens

The included NIKKOR Z 24–70mm f/4 S is a standard zoom lens covering a wide-angle to short telephoto range, ideal for general photography and portrait work. It maintains a constant f/4 maximum aperture throughout the zoom range, offering consistent exposure and a compact, lightweight design.

The optical construction includes:
