Description
The Nikon Z 7II keeps the look and feel of the original Z 7, but adds noticeably more speed, flexibility and processing power. It features a 45.7 MP FX-format back-illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor and dual EXPEED 6 image processors, making it ideal for photographers who demand extremely high detail and image quality.
The sensor does not use an optical low-pass filter, allowing it to capture the finest possible detail. Its native ISO range extends down to ISO 64 for rich, clean images with excellent dynamic range. Thanks to the updated processing, the camera now offers continuous shooting up to 10 fps with a deeper buffer for action, and supports UHD 4K video up to 60p. For more advanced workflows, 10-bit video can be recorded externally with N-Log or HLG (HDR).
The on-sensor phase-detection AF system uses 493 focus points and now supports Eye-Detect AF in Wide-Area AF modes and during movie recording. AF works in low light down to −4.5 EV. A 5-axis in-body Vibration Reduction system stabilizes any attached lens to help minimize camera shake.
Physically, the Z 7II keeps the original ergonomic body design but adds a dual card slot layout: one CFexpress Type B (or XQD) and one SD UHS-II, for more flexible storage options. A 3.6M-dot OLED electronic viewfinder and a 3.2" 2.1M-dot tilting touchscreen LCD provide multiple options for composition and playback. SnapBridge wireless connectivity supports remote control, image transfer to a mobile device and simple, over-the-air firmware updates.
Firmware version 1.10 adds UHD 4K recording at 60p and 50p, allows raw video output to Blackmagic Design Video Assist recorders and improves eye-detection AF in Auto-Area and Wide-Area AF modes.
Second-Generation Z Enhancements
Nikon has evolved the Z 7 into the Z 7II by adding performance and versatility while preserving what made the original camera popular:
-
Dual EXPEED 6 processors increase buffer capacity, enable 10 fps continuous shooting and reduce viewfinder blackout.
-
Updated AF introduces Eye and Face Detection for humans and animals in Wide-Area AF, for both stills and video.
-
Timed long exposure is now supported up to 900 seconds (15 minutes) without an external remote.
-
Dual card slots (CFexpress Type B + SD UHS-II) support overflow, backup and split recording of different file types.
-
USB Type-C allows in-camera charging and continuous power for long shoots or travel.
-
Focus ring rotation on compatible lenses can be reversed to match your preferred direction.
-
External HDR (HLG) recording produces HDR-ready video for immediate playback on HDR-capable displays; N-Log is also available for maximum flexibility in color grading.
-
Optional ProRes RAW upgrade (via service) adds the ability to output ProRes RAW to compatible Atomos recorders, including 12-bit raw over HDMI for advanced grading workflows.
-
SnapBridge can be used not only for transfer and remote control, but also for updating firmware without a memory card.
-
Creative options include Multiple Exposure, 20 Picture Control profiles, in-camera time-lapse recording and Focus Shift shooting (up to 300 frames) for focus stacking.
-
Compatible with the optional MB-N11 Power Battery Pack for extended battery life and improved handling, particularly for vertical shooting.
45.7 MP FX-Format BSI CMOS Sensor and Dual EXPEED 6 Processors
-
45.7 MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor delivers high resolution, excellent low-light performance and fast readout, which benefits continuous shooting, video and time-lapse.
-
The BSI design produces cleaner output at high ISO values and smooth, detailed results at low ISO, from ISO 64 up to a native ISO 25,600.
-
No optical low-pass filter is used, so maximum sharpness and fine detail are preserved.
-
Twin EXPEED 6 processors provide high-speed operation across the system, including continuous shooting up to 10 fps for around 50 frames (depending on settings).
UHD 4K Video and Advanced Features
The Z 7II is designed as a true hybrid stills and video camera:
-
UHD 4K recording up to 60p.
-
Full HD 1080p recording up to 120p for smooth slow-motion playback.
-
Video can be recorded internally to the memory card or sent uncompressed over HDMI to an external recorder.
Advanced video functions include:
-
N-Log gamma for flat, high dynamic range footage that is easier to grade.
-
HLG (HDR) for recording footage ready for HDR displays.
-
10-bit output over HDMI for higher-quality color and tonal detail.
-
Electronic VR (e-VR) to further stabilize handheld video.
-
Focus Peaking to support precise manual focusing.
-
Zebra display to help identify overexposed areas in the frame.
-
Audio recording via built-in stereo mic or external microphone through the 3.5 mm input; a headphone jack allows live monitoring and more control over audio.
Firmware version 1.10 makes UHD 4K 60p and 50p available, enables raw video output to Blackmagic Design Video Assist and further refines eye-detection AF with Auto-Area and Wide-Area AF.
493-Point Phase-Detect AF System
-
493 on-sensor phase-detection AF points cover roughly 90% of the frame horizontally and vertically, delivering fast, accurate focusing for both stills and video.
-
The wide coverage supports reliable subject tracking right to the edges of the frame.
-
Hybrid AF for video automatically switches between phase-detect and contrast-detect methods to keep focus transitions smooth and stable.
-
NIKKOR Z lenses are optimized for quiet AF operation, making them ideal for video recording.
In-Body Vibration Reduction
-
Five-axis sensor-shift Vibration Reduction compensates for camera shake by up to approximately 5 stops, regardless of which Z-mount lens is used.
-
When F-mount lenses are used via the FTZ adapter, 3-axis stabilization is active, improving sharpness with many existing lenses.
Body Design and Connectivity
-
3.2" 2.1M-dot LCD: bright, detailed, tilting display for live view and playback, with full touch control for menus, focus and image review.
