The Nikon Z9 is a pro-level mirrorless flagship built for speed, image quality and connectivity. It introduces a newly developed full-frame stacked sensor, advanced autofocus, and high-resolution 8K video in a rugged body designed for demanding photographers and filmmakers across many genres.

Stacked Sensor and Processing Power

45.7 MP Stacked BSI CMOS Sensor
At the heart of the Z9 is a 45.7 MP FX-format back-illuminated stacked CMOS sensor.

• The stacked structure enables extremely fast readout and significantly reduces rolling shutter distortion.

• The BSI (back-illuminated) design improves clarity and keeps noise low, even at high ISO settings.

• The 45.7 MP resolution suits landscape, portrait, commercial and any detail-focused work, while also supporting internal video recording at up to 8K.

• Native ISO range is ISO 64–25,600, expandable to ISO 32–102,400, giving flexibility from bright daylight to low light.

EXPEED 7 Image Processor
Working alongside the sensor is the EXPEED 7 processor, around 10× faster than the engine in the Z7 II.

This combination provides:

• Continuous shooting up to 20 fps in RAW

• Up to 30 fps in full-resolution JPEG

• Up to 120 fps with 11 MP stills

All of these rates support full-time AF and AE.

Additional performance features:

• Buffer for over 1000 RAW images, allowing roughly 50 seconds of continuous RAW capture at top speed

• Electronic shutter speeds up to 1/32,000 s for wide-aperture shooting in bright conditions

• Greatly reduced rolling-shutter distortion so fast-moving subjects such as golf clubs, rackets or bats appear natural, even at very short shutter speeds

• AF calculations at up to 120 fps to keep focus locked during high-speed bursts

• New High Efficiency RAW format that preserves image quality comparable to uncompressed RAW while reducing file size by roughly 30%, improving write and read times

Electronic Shutter–Only Design

The Z9 dispenses with a mechanical shutter entirely and relies solely on the ultra-fast electronic shutter:

• Top electronic shutter speed of 1/32,000 s

• Flash sync up to 1/200 s plus support for high-speed sync

• Very low rolling-shutter artifacts thanks to the stacked sensor’s readout speed

• Completely silent shooting with no mechanical sound or wear

If you prefer audible feedback, a configurable shutter sound can be enabled and its volume adjusted to match the shooting environment.

Fast, Intelligent Autofocus

493-Point Phase-Detection AF
The Z9’s AF system covers almost the entire sensor area with 493 phase-detection points:

• AF sampling up to 120 times per second for fast, accurate focus tracking

• Reliable performance in low light with Starlight mode, allowing autofocus down to about −8.5 EV, ideal for astrophotography, concerts and other dark scenes

Subject Detection with Deep Learning
A deep-learning AF algorithm allows the camera to recognize and track nine types of subjects, including:

• People

• Animals

• Vehicles such as airplanes, trains, bicycles and motorbikes

In Auto-Area AF, the camera automatically detects, prioritizes and tracks these subjects as they move across the frame. Eye-Detection AF has been refined to recognize eyes more reliably, whether they are large or very small in the image.

The Z9 is also the first Nikon mirrorless camera to bring over 3D Tracking from Nikon DSLRs. Working together with subject detection, 3D Tracking helps lock onto fast, erratic subjects moving toward, away from and across the camera. Three Dynamic-Area AF modes with different area sizes further tailor performance to different types of motion.

8K and 4K Video Capabilities

Up to 8K Recording
The Z9 is also a powerful video camera, with resolutions and frame rates that meet high-end production needs:

• UHD 8K (7680 × 4320) at up to 30p using full pixel readout

• Up to approximately 2 hours 5 minutes continuous 8K 30p recording (under ideal conditions)

For 4K:

• Full-frame UHD 4K up to 120p for smooth slow-motion playback

• Oversampled UHD 4K up to 30p from an 8K area for maximum sharpness and detail

You can also capture high-resolution still frames directly from video:
