Description

The Panasonic Lumix S5 II is designed for creators who need strong performance in both still photography and video. Its second-generation design introduces a new 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor, an updated L2 processing engine, and Phase Hybrid AF, making it the first Lumix camera with this fast, precise autofocus system. The camera records 6K video (up to 30 minutes) and offers unlimited 4K recording. Optimized for video, it also includes a new Active I.S. system that improves stabilization during handheld and walking shots.

New Sensor and Processing Engine

The S5 II’s upgraded 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor works with the L2 image processor to deliver high image quality, wide dynamic range, and responsive performance. The sensor integrates a new Phase Hybrid AF system with 779 phase-detection points, significantly improving subject tracking and focus reliability.

The camera offers a native ISO range of 100–51,200, expandable to 50–204,800, allowing you to work in everything from bright daylight to very low light. For action and fast movement, the S5 II supports continuous shooting at up to 9 fps with the mechanical shutter and up to 30 fps with the electronic shutter at full resolution.

Using its in-body sensor-shift stabilization, the S5 II also offers a High Resolution mode. In this mode, eight exposures are captured and combined into a single 96MP RAW or JPEG image at 12000 × 8000 pixels. This mode is best suited to static subjects and tripod use, delivering more detail and more accurate color than a single exposure.

6K and 4K Video Recording

The S5 II offers powerful video capabilities alongside its stills performance. It records full-frame 6K 30p video in 4:2:0 10-bit color for up to 30 minutes. In DCI and UHD 4K 60p 4:2:2 10-bit modes, recording is effectively unlimited, restricted only by media capacity and thermal limits. For slow-motion work, the camera supports frame rates up to 120p, enabling smooth, high-resolution slow-motion footage. RAW output over HDMI is available via an optional license upgrade.

V-Log is pre-installed and provides a flat, neutral gamma curve with around 14+ stops of dynamic range. This gives precise control for color grading in post-production and ensures seamless editing alongside footage from Panasonic VariCam cinema cameras.

Borrowing from Panasonic’s broadcast camera line, Dual Native ISO technology helps balance low noise with high sensitivity by using two base ISO circuits for each pixel:

  • Low ISO circuit base values:
    ISO 100 (standard)
    ISO 640 (V-Log)
    ISO 400 (HLG)
    ISO 200 (Cinelike D2/V2)

  • Low Noise circuit base values:
    ISO 640 (standard)
    ISO 4000 (V-Log)
    ISO 2500 (HLG)
    ISO 1250 (Cinelike D2/V2)

Phase Hybrid AF System

The S5 II is the first Lumix mirrorless camera with Phase Hybrid AF, combining phase-detection and contrast-detection for faster, more dependable focusing. With 779 phase-detection points, it offers high AF accuracy in both stills and video.

This autofocus system is designed to perform reliably in challenging scenarios where previous contrast-only systems could struggle, such as:

  • Backlit scenes

  • Low-light environments

  • Situations with multiple overlapping subjects

Whether recording video or shooting stills, the camera can consistently track the intended subject, even in complex lighting or crowded scenes.

Dual I.S. 2 with Active I.S. Stabilization

For handheld shooting, the S5 II uses Dual I.S. 2, which combines 5-axis in-body stabilization with compatible lens-based stabilization to provide up to approximately 6.5 stops of shake compensation. This improves sharpness in handheld stills.

For video, the camera includes a newly developed Active I.S. system that enhances stabilization when the camera is moving, especially during walking shots, resulting in smoother and more stable handheld footage.

Body Design and Handling

  • L-Mount: Works with lenses from the L-Mount Alliance, supporting a wide range of modern and classic optics, including anamorphic lenses that have been in use for decades.

  • Electronic Viewfinder: 3.68m-dot OLED EVF with approximately 0.78x magnification and selectable 60 fps or 120 fps refresh rates for smooth viewing.

  • Rear Screen: 3.0" 1.84m-dot free-angle LCD, ideal for live view, playback, menu navigation, and front-facing use. The touchscreen interface supports intuitive tap and swipe control.

  • Controls: 8-direction joystick and a clean menu design for fast, efficient operation.

  • Connectivity: USB-C port for high-speed data transfer and in-camera charging, full-size HDMI-A port for robust video output, 2.5 mm port for optional DMW-RS2 remote shutter, and 3.5 mm microphone and headphone jacks for advanced audio workflows.

  • Storage: Dual SD card slots, both UHS-II compatible, enabling separate RAW/JPEG recording, backup recording, or relay recording to maximize capacity.

  • Cooling: Built-in cooling fan to manage internal temperatures and support longer or unlimited video recording.

  • Construction: Magnesium alloy body with dust- and splash-resistant design for use in demanding conditions.

Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Connectivity

  • Dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, including Wi-Fi 5) offers fast wireless transfers and responsive remote control.

  • The Lumix Sync app (for Android and iOS) supports remote shooting, wireless image transfer, and easy firmware updates.

Other Camera Features

  • Real-time LUT: Apply custom look-up tables in-camera, enabling baked-in looks or on-set previewing of graded styles.

  • Live Cropping: Allows in-frame panning and zooming while recording video, without moving the camera physically.

  • Extended Aspect Ratios: In addition to 3:2, 4:3, 1:1, and 16:9, photos can be captured in 65:24 and 2:1 panoramic formats.

  • Color Shading Compensation: Corrects peripheral color shifts that may occur when mounting older or adapted lenses.

  • Lumix Tether support: Enables USB-based remote control and monitoring for photo and video.

  • 4-channel 48 kHz or 96 kHz 24-bit audio recording when using the optional DMW-XLR1 XLR adapter.

Panasonic Lumix S 70–300mm f/4.5–5.6 MACRO O.I.S. Lens

The Lumix S 70–300mm f/4.5–5.6 MACRO O.I.S. lens is a telephoto zoom designed for full-frame L-Mount cameras. It combines reach, close-up capabilities, and strong stabilization to suit sports, wildlife, action, and macro-style shooting.

Advanced optical image stabilization works together with Dual I.S. 2 for sharper handheld images at telephoto focal lengths and allows the use of slower shutter speeds. Improved zoom position detection increases tracking performance threefold, and refined telephoto operation can offer zoom tracking control up to eight times faster thanks to 240 Hz wobble control.

The lens includes half-macro capability, offering up to 0.5x magnification at 300 mm for detailed close-ups. Focus breathing is suppressed for smoother, more natural video, and the focusing and zoom ring operation is designed for precise, controlled movements. Its dust-, splash-, and freeze-resistant construction makes it suitable for outdoor and harsh environments.

Key features include:

  • Optical image stabilization with Dual I.S. 2 support

  • Up to 5.5 stops of dual-axis stabilization (camera + lens)

  • 17 elements in 11 groups for sharp, corrected imagery

  • High-precision tracking performance across the zoom range
