Description
The Panasonic Lumix S5 II mirrorless camera is built for creators who need strong performance in both stills and video. It features a newly designed 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor and an updated L2 image processing engine. This combination enables fast Phase Hybrid AF, high image quality, and advanced video capabilities. The camera can record 6K video for up to 30 minutes and offers unlimited 4K recording. Optimized for handheld video, the S5 II also includes a new Active I.S. stabilization system that improves stability when walking or moving with the camera.
New Sensor and Processing Engine
The upgraded 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor and L2 processor introduce a Phase Hybrid AF system with 779 phase-detection points, a first for Lumix cameras. This dramatically improves subject detection and tracking. The camera offers a wide ISO range from 100 to 51,200 (expandable to 50–204,800), allowing flexible shooting in various lighting conditions.
For fast action, the S5 II supports continuous shooting up to 9 fps using the mechanical shutter and up to 30 fps with the electronic shutter at full resolution. The camera’s in-body 5-axis sensor-shift stabilization works not only for standard shooting but also enables a High Resolution mode. In this mode, eight exposures are combined into one 96MP RAW or JPEG image at 12000 × 8000 pixels, ideal for tripod-based work and static subjects when maximum detail and color accuracy are needed.
6K and 4K Video Recording
Alongside stills performance, the S5 II is a very capable video camera. It can record full-frame 6K 30p video in 4:2:0 10-bit color for up to 30 minutes. It also supports unlimited recording in DCI and UHD 4K 60p 4:2:2 10-bit modes. For creative slow-motion work, the camera records video at up to 120p. RAW output via HDMI is available via an optional license upgrade.
V-Log is pre-installed and offers a flat, neutral gamma profile with approximately 14+ stops of dynamic range. This gives you fine control over color grading in post and allows easy matching with footage from Panasonic VariCam systems.
To handle different lighting environments efficiently, the S5 II uses Dual Native ISO technology. Each pixel has two dedicated gain circuits:
-
Low ISO circuit base values:
ISO 100 (standard)
ISO 640 (V-Log)
ISO 400 (HLG)
ISO 200 (Cinelike D2/V2) -
Low Noise circuit base values:
ISO 640 (standard)
ISO 4000 (V-Log)
ISO 2500 (HLG)
ISO 1250 (Cinelike D2/V2)
This design helps maintain lower noise at higher ISOs while keeping high sensitivity for low-light shooting.
Phase Hybrid AF System
The S5 II is the first Lumix mirrorless model to incorporate Phase Hybrid AF. With 779 phase-detection points, it delivers fast, precise focusing and high reliability in both stills and video. It is engineered to deal with situations that previously challenged contrast-only systems, including:
-
Strong backlighting
-
Low-light environments
-
Scenes with multiple, overlapping subjects
The camera can continuously track your chosen subject, making it easier to keep focus exactly where you want it in complex scenarios.
Dual I.S. 2 with Active I.S.
For handheld photography, Dual I.S. 2 combines 5-axis in-body stabilization with compatible lens-based stabilization to offer compensation of up to approximately 6.5 stops of camera shake. This improves sharpness in stills, especially at slower shutter speeds.
For video, the new Active I.S. mode further enhances stabilization for walking and moving shots, reducing wobble and producing smoother handheld footage.
