Description

The Panasonic Lumix S5 II mirrorless camera is built for creators who need strong performance in both stills and video. It features a newly designed 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor and an updated L2 image processing engine. Together, these make the S5 II the first Lumix camera to use Phase Hybrid AF, delivering fast, accurate autofocus. The camera records 6K video for up to 30 minutes and offers unlimited 4K recording. Designed with video in mind, it also includes an Active I.S. system that stabilizes handheld and walking shots for smoother footage.

New Sensor and Processing Engine

The upgraded 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor works alongside the L2 processor and incorporates a new Phase Hybrid AF system with 779 phase-detection points, greatly improving subject tracking and focus reliability. The sensor delivers a wide dynamic range and supports an ISO range of 100–51,200, expandable to 50–204,800, so it can be used confidently in many lighting conditions.

For action and fast-moving subjects, the S5 II offers continuous shooting up to 9 fps with the mechanical shutter and up to 30 fps with the electronic shutter at full resolution. The in-body 5-axis sensor-shift stabilization not only supports standard stills and video, but also powers a High Resolution mode that combines eight frames into one 96MP RAW or JPEG image at 12000 × 8000 pixels. This mode is ideal for static scenes and tripod work, providing more detail and better color accuracy than a single exposure.

6K and 4K Video Recording

In addition to stills, the S5 II is a highly capable video camera. It records full-frame 6K 30p video in 4:2:0 10-bit color for up to 30 minutes, and it supports unlimited recording in DCI and UHD 4K 60p 4:2:2 10-bit modes. For slow-motion work, the camera offers frame rates up to 120p, enabling smooth high-resolution slow-motion footage. RAW output over HDMI is available with an optional license upgrade.

V-Log comes pre-installed and provides a flat, neutral gamma curve with approximately 14+ stops of dynamic range. This gives precise control in color grading and allows footage to be matched seamlessly with Panasonic VariCam cameras.

Borrowed from Panasonic’s broadcast line, Dual Native ISO technology helps balance low noise with high sensitivity. Each pixel has two separate circuits:

  • Low ISO circuit base values:
    ISO 100 (standard)
    ISO 640 (V-Log)
    ISO 400 (HLG)
    ISO 200 (Cinelike D2/V2)

  • Low Noise circuit base values:
    ISO 640 (standard)
    ISO 4000 (V-Log)
    ISO 2500 (HLG)
    ISO 1250 (Cinelike D2/V2)

This approach helps maintain clean images across a wide range of ISOs.

Phase Hybrid AF System

The S5 II is the first Lumix mirrorless camera to adopt Phase Hybrid AF, combining phase-detection and contrast-detection for fast, reliable focusing. With 779 phase-detection points, it offers highly accurate autofocus in both stills and video.

This system is designed to perform in six key challenging situations, including low light, strong backlight, and scenes with multiple moving subjects. The camera can reliably maintain focus on the intended subject even when others move across the frame or when lighting is difficult.

Dual I.S. 2 with Active I.S.

For handheld stills, Dual I.S. 2 combines in-body 5-axis stabilization with compatible lens stabilization to provide approximately 6.5 stops of shake compensation. For video, the newly developed Active I.S. system further improves stabilization while the camera is moving, especially during walking shots, resulting in smoother, more stable footage.
