Description

The Panasonic Lumix S5 II mirrorless camera is designed for creators who need strong performance in both stills and video. It features a newly developed 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor and an updated L2 image processing engine. This combination makes the S5 II the first Lumix camera with Phase Hybrid AF, providing fast, accurate autofocus. The camera records 6K video for up to 30 minutes and offers unlimited 4K recording. Optimized for video use, it also includes an Active I.S. system that stabilizes handheld and walking shots for smoother footage.

New Sensor and Processing Engine

The upgraded 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor works with the L2 processor and integrates a Phase Hybrid AF system with 779 phase-detection points, greatly improving subject tracking and focus reliability. The sensor delivers a wide dynamic range and supports ISO 100–51,200, expandable to ISO 50–204,800, making it suitable for many lighting conditions.

For fast-moving subjects, the S5 II offers continuous shooting up to 9 fps with the mechanical shutter and up to 30 fps with the electronic shutter at full resolution. The in-body 5-axis sensor-shift stabilization also powers a High Resolution mode, which takes eight exposures and combines them into a single 96MP RAW or JPEG file with 12000 × 8000 pixels. This mode is ideal for static subjects and tripod work, delivering greater detail and more accurate color than a single shot.

6K and 4K Video Recording

The S5 II is highly capable for video recording. It captures full-frame 6K 30p footage in 4:2:0 10-bit color for up to 30 minutes and supports unlimited recording in DCI and UHD 4K 60p 4:2:2 10-bit. For slow-motion work, it records at up to 120p, allowing smooth high-resolution slow-motion sequences. RAW output over HDMI is available with an optional license.

V-Log is pre-installed, providing a flat, neutral gamma profile with approximately 14+ stops of dynamic range. This enables precise control during color grading and seamless matching with footage from Panasonic VariCam cameras.

To balance low noise and high sensitivity, the S5 II uses Dual Native ISO technology with two separate base circuits per pixel:

  • Low ISO circuit base values:
    ISO 100 (standard)
    ISO 640 (V-Log)
    ISO 400 (HLG)
    ISO 200 (Cinelike D2/V2)

  • Low Noise circuit base values:
    ISO 640 (standard)
    ISO 4000 (V-Log)
    ISO 2500 (HLG)
    ISO 1250 (Cinelike D2/V2)

Phase Hybrid AF System

The S5 II is the first Lumix mirrorless camera to feature Phase Hybrid AF, combining phase-detection and contrast-detection autofocus. With 779 phase-detection points, it provides fast, precise focusing in both stills and video, even in challenging conditions.

This AF system is designed to be dependable in difficult situations such as backlit scenes, low-light environments, and frames containing multiple moving subjects. It continuously tracks the intended subject and helps maintain accurate focus throughout the shot.

Dual I.S. 2 with Active I.S.

For handheld photography, Dual I.S. 2 combines 5-axis in-body stabilization with compatible lens-based stabilization to offer up to approximately 6.5 stops of shake compensation. For video, the new Active I.S. system further improves stabilization when the camera is moving, particularly during walking shots, to achieve smoother, more stable footage.

Panasonic Lumix S 18–40mm f/4.5–6.3 Lens

The Lumix S 18–40mm f/4.5–6.3 is an ultra-compact zoom lens designed for full-frame L-Mount cameras. Weighing only about 155 g (5.5 oz), it is extremely light and easy to carry, making it an ideal everyday or travel lens.

It covers focal lengths from an ultra-wide 18 mm to a standard 40 mm, making it suitable for:

  • Expansive landscapes

  • Architecture and interiors

  • Natural-perspective snapshots

With a minimum focusing distance of 0.15 m (5.91") and a maximum magnification of 0.28x, it is also capable of capturing detailed close-up shots. Focus breathing is suppressed, making it well-suited for video recording as well as photography.

The optical design includes 8 elements in 7 groups, with aspherical (ASPH), extra-low dispersion (ED), and ultra high refractive (UHR) elements to minimize aberrations and maintain high resolution and contrast across the frame. The compact size pairs especially well with smaller bodies, delivering a balanced and portable setup.
