Description

The Panasonic Lumix S5 II mirrorless camera is designed for creators who need powerful performance in both stills and video. It features a new 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor and an L2 image processing engine, making it the first Lumix camera to use Phase Hybrid AF for fast, precise autofocus. Making full use of this sensor and processor, the S5 II records 6K video for up to 30 minutes and offers unlimited 4K recording. The camera is further optimized for video with an Active I.S. system that stabilizes handheld and walking shots for smoother footage.

New sensor and processing engine

The upgraded 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor works with the L2 processor and incorporates a Phase Hybrid AF system with 779 phase-detection points, greatly improving focus speed and subject tracking. It offers a wide dynamic range and an ISO range of 100–51,200, expandable to 50–204,800 for use in varied lighting conditions.

For action and fast-moving subjects, the S5 II supports full-resolution continuous shooting up to 9 fps with the mechanical shutter and up to 30 fps with the electronic shutter. The in-body 5-axis sensor-shift stabilization also powers a High Resolution mode that captures eight exposures and combines them into a single 96MP RAW or JPEG image (12000 × 8000 pixels). This mode is ideal for static scenes on a tripod, delivering much finer detail and more accurate color than a single shot.

6K and 4K video recording

The S5 II is highly capable for video. It records full-frame 6K 30p video in 4:2:0 10-bit color for up to 30 minutes. Unlimited recording is possible in DCI and UHD 4K 60p 4:2:2 10-bit modes. For slow-motion work, the camera supports up to 120p recording, allowing smooth, high-resolution slow-motion clips. RAW HDMI output is available with an optional license upgrade.

V-Log is pre-installed and provides a flat, neutral gamma curve with around 14+ stops of dynamic range, giving precise control over color grading and ensuring easy matching with Panasonic VariCam footage.

Dual Native ISO, drawn from Panasonic’s broadcast cameras, helps balance low noise with high sensitivity. Each pixel has two dedicated circuits:

  • Low ISO circuit base values:
    ISO 100 (standard)
    ISO 640 (V-Log)
    ISO 400 (HLG)
    ISO 200 (Cinelike D2/V2)

  • Low Noise circuit base values:
    ISO 640 (standard)
    ISO 4000 (V-Log)
    ISO 2500 (HLG)
    ISO 1250 (Cinelike D2/V2)

Phase Hybrid AF system

The S5 II is the first Lumix mirrorless model to adopt Phase Hybrid AF, combining phase-detection and contrast-detection focusing. With 779 phase-detection points, it offers fast, precise autofocus for both stills and video.

This system is designed for reliability in challenging situations such as backlit scenes, low light, and frames containing multiple moving people. It can continuously track the intended subject even when other objects move through the scene, helping ensure consistent focus in complex environments.

Dual I.S. 2 with Active I.S.

For handheld stills, Dual I.S. 2 combines 5-axis in-body stabilization with compatible lens-based stabilization to provide up to approximately 6.5 stops of compensation, improving sharpness at slower shutter speeds. For video, the new Active I.S. system enhances stabilization when the camera is moving, especially during walking shots, resulting in smoother handheld footage.

Panasonic Lumix S 20–60mm f/3.5–5.6 lens

The Lumix S 20–60mm f/3.5–5.6 is a compact and versatile zoom lens for full-frame L-Mount cameras. It covers ultra-wide to short telephoto fields of view, from 20 mm to 60 mm, making it ideal for landscapes, interiors, street work, and everyday shooting. On APS-C cameras, it provides an equivalent range of approximately 30–90 mm.

The lens can focus as close as 5.91" (15 cm) and offers a maximum magnification of 0.43x, allowing for near-macro work and detailed close-ups. Its optical design includes:

  • Two aspherical elements and one ultra high refractive index (UHR) element to reduce distortion and spherical aberrations and maintain edge-to-edge sharpness.

  • Three extra-low dispersion elements to minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing, improving clarity and color accuracy.

A stepping AF motor provides quick, quiet focusing suitable for both stills and video. Additional features include:

  • AF/MF switch for fast switching between autofocus and manual focus.

  • Rounded 9-blade diaphragm for smooth, pleasing bokeh.

  • Splash-, dust-, and freeze-resistant construction for use in harsh conditions down to 14°F.

  • Fluorine-coated front element to repel dirt and oil and make cleaning easier.

Panasonic Lumix S 50mm f/1.8 L-Mount lens

The Lumix S 50mm f/1.8 is a compact prime lens designed for full-frame L-Mount cameras. Its 50 mm focal length offers a natural perspective suitable for portraits, everyday scenes, and video work. The bright f/1.8 maximum aperture gives strong depth-of-field control and good low-light performance while keeping the lens small and lightweight.

The optical design contains 9 elements in 8 groups, including:

  • 3 aspherical (ASPH) elements

  • 1 extra-low dispersion (ED) element

  • 1 ultra high refractive index (UHR) element

This configuration helps minimize aberrations and maintain high resolution across the frame. The lens also features:

  • 9-blade circular diaphragm for attractive, smooth bokeh.

  • Dust-, splash-, and freeze-resistant design for shooting in tough conditions (down to –10°C / 14°F).

  • 67 mm front filter thread.

  • Compact size and light weight (approximately 300 g without caps or hood), making it easy to use for both stills and video.

Panasonic DMW-XLR1 XLR microphone adapter

The Panasonic DMW-XLR1 is a shoe-mounted adapter that expands the audio capabilities of compatible Lumix cameras. It connects via the camera’s hot shoe and provides two XLR inputs for professional microphones. It draws power directly from the camera, so no separate power source is needed.

The unit features an integrated control panel with a clear protective cover, providing individual controls for:

  • Input level

  • Gain

  • Low cut filter

It supports high-resolution audio recording at 48 kHz or 96 kHz, with 16-bit or 24-bit depth in up to two channels. A built-in cable clamp helps manage microphone cables, and an accessory shoe on top allows mounting additional gear such as lights or wireless receivers.
