Description

The Panasonic Lumix S5 II mirrorless camera is built for creators who need strong, reliable performance in both still photos and video. It uses a newly designed 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor and an updated L2 image processor, making it the first Lumix model to feature Phase Hybrid AF for fast, accurate autofocus. Taking full advantage of this sensor and processor, the camera can record 6K video for up to 30 minutes and offers unlimited 4K recording. It is also tuned for video work with a new Active I.S. system that stabilizes handheld and walking shots for smoother footage.

New sensor and processing engine

The 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor is paired with the L2 processor and includes a Phase Hybrid AF system with 779 phase-detection points, providing much better tracking and focus performance. The sensor offers a wide dynamic range and supports a standard ISO range of 100–51,200 (expandable to 50–204,800), allowing you to work in anything from bright daylight to low light.

For action, the S5 II can shoot at up to 9 frames per second with the mechanical shutter and up to 30 fps with the electronic shutter at full resolution. In-body 5-axis sensor-shift stabilization keeps handheld shots sharp and also enables a High Resolution mode that combines eight exposures into a single 96MP RAW or JPEG file (12000 × 8000 pixels). This mode works best with static subjects on a tripod and produces images with more detail and better color accuracy than a standard single shot.

6K and 4K video recording

Beyond stills, the S5 II is a capable video camera. It records full-frame 6K 30p video in 4:2:0 10-bit color for up to 30 minutes and supports unlimited recording in DCI and UHD 4K 60p 4:2:2 10-bit modes. For high-quality slow motion, it can record at up to 120p. RAW output over HDMI is available with an optional license upgrade.

V-Log comes pre-installed, giving a flat, neutral gamma curve and around 14+ stops of dynamic range. This allows for precise color grading in post and smooth integration with Panasonic VariCam footage.

To handle different lighting conditions with minimal noise, the S5 II uses Dual Native ISO. Each pixel has two separate gain circuits:

  • Low ISO circuit base values:
    ISO 100 (standard)
    ISO 640 (V-Log)
    ISO 400 (HLG)
    ISO 200 (Cinelike D2/V2)

  • Low Noise circuit base values:
    ISO 640 (standard)
    ISO 4000 (V-Log)
    ISO 2500 (HLG)
    ISO 1250 (Cinelike D2/V2)

Phase Hybrid AF system

The S5 II is the first Lumix mirrorless camera to use Phase Hybrid AF, combining phase-detection and contrast-detection focusing. With 779 phase-detection points, it delivers fast, precise autofocus in both stills and video.

The AF system is designed to remain dependable in six challenging situations, including low light, backlighting, and scenes with several moving people. It tracks the intended subject continuously, even when other moving objects enter the frame or when light levels are difficult.

Dual I.S. 2 and Active I.S.

For still photography, Dual I.S. 2 combines 5-axis in-body stabilization with compatible lens stabilization to provide up to approximately 6.5 stops of shake compensation, helping keep handheld photos sharp. For video, the newly developed Active I.S. mode further improves stabilization when shooting on the move, particularly while walking, making handheld footage smoother and more stable.
