The Panasonic Lumix S5 II mirrorless camera is built for creators who need strong performance in both stills and video. It features a 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor and an L2 image processing engine, and is the first Lumix camera to use Phase Hybrid AF for fast, precise autofocus. Making full use of the sensor and processor, the S5 II records 6K video for up to 30 minutes and offers unlimited 4K recording. For smooth handheld video, it also includes a new Active I.S. system that stabilizes walking and moving shots.

New sensor and image processing

The upgraded 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor, together with the L2 engine, introduces a Phase Hybrid AF system with 779 phase-detection points for significantly improved tracking and accuracy. The sensor delivers high sensitivity and a wide dynamic range, with a standard ISO range of 100–51,200, expandable to 50–204,800 for low-light work.

For action photography, the S5 II supports continuous shooting at up to 9 fps with the mechanical shutter and up to 30 fps with the electronic shutter at full resolution. The in-body 5-axis sensor-shift stabilization also enables a High Resolution mode, combining eight exposures into a single 96MP RAW or JPEG file (12000 × 8000 pixels). This mode is ideal for static subjects on a tripod and produces images with significantly more detail and more accurate color than a single frame.

6K and 4K video capabilities

The S5 II is highly capable for video. It can record full-frame 6K 30p footage in 4:2:0 10-bit color for up to 30 minutes. Unlimited recording is possible when shooting in DCI or UHD 4K 60p 4:2:2 10-bit modes, limited only by card capacity and heat. For high-quality slow motion, the camera supports recording at up to 120p, allowing smooth, detailed slow-motion sequences. RAW output over HDMI is available via an optional license upgrade.

V-Log is pre-installed, providing a flat, neutral gamma curve with about 14+ stops of dynamic range, which offers precise control for color grading and easy matching with Panasonic VariCam footage.

To balance noise and sensitivity, the S5 II uses Dual Native ISO, with two dedicated gain circuits for each pixel:

• Low ISO circuit bases: ISO 100 (standard), ISO 640 (V-Log), ISO 400 (HLG), ISO 200 (Cinelike D2/V2)

Phase Hybrid AF system

The S5 II is the first Lumix mirrorless camera to adopt a Phase Hybrid AF system, combining phase-detection and contrast-detection autofocus. With 779 phase-detection points, it delivers fast and precise focusing for both stills and video.

AF reliability is a priority, and this system is designed to track subjects across six challenging situations, including low light, strong backlighting, and scenes with multiple moving people. Whether shooting photos or video, the camera consistently follows the intended subject, even when other objects enter the frame.

Dual I.S. 2 and Active I.S. stabilization

For handheld photography, Dual I.S. 2 combines the 5-axis in-body stabilizer with compatible optical stabilizers in lenses to offer up to approximately 6.5 stops of shake compensation. For video, the newly developed Active I.S. mode further enhances stabilization when the camera is moving, especially during walking shots, resulting in smoother handheld footage.

A linear autofocus motor suppresses focus breathing and delivers smooth, precise, and near-silent focusing, making the lens suitable for both stills and video. Linear focus ring control supports mechanical follow-focus systems by moving focus at a constant speed matched to the rotation angle of the ring. For video work, micro-step aperture control enables smooth exposure transitions.

A rounded 9-blade diaphragm contributes to soft, pleasing bokeh. The lens is also dust-, moisture-, and freeze-resistant, providing increased protection in harsh conditions.
