Description

The Panasonic Lumix S5 IIX is designed for professional creators who need powerful stills, advanced video tools, and built-in livestreaming. It builds on a new 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor and an updated L2 engine, and is the first Lumix camera to feature Phase Hybrid AF for fast, accurate autofocus. The camera records 6K video for up to 30 minutes and offers unlimited 4K recording. Optimized for video-first workflows, it also features a new Active I.S. system that stabilizes walking shots and other handheld movement.

What sets the S5 IIX apart is its pro-focused video and streaming feature set. Out of the box it supports HDMI RAW output, recording to USB SSDs, ALL-Intra and ProRes codecs, and live IP streaming. Streaming options include wireless IP streaming, USB tethering via smartphone, and wired IP streaming, making the S5 IIX a highly flexible tool for modern production and broadcasting. It is also the first Lumix camera with a fully stealthy all-black design for a more discreet professional look.

New sensor and processing engine

The full-frame 24.2MP CMOS sensor and L2 processor power a Phase Hybrid AF system with 779 phase-detection points. This delivers significantly improved subject tracking and focus reliability. The sensor supports a wide dynamic range with a standard ISO range of 100–51,200, expandable to 50–204,800, making the camera suitable for a wide variety of lighting conditions.

For fast-moving subjects, the S5 IIX can shoot up to 9 fps with the mechanical shutter and up to 30 fps with the electronic shutter at full resolution. In-body 5-axis sensor-shift stabilization supports stills and video and also enables a High Resolution mode that captures eight frames and combines them into a single 96MP RAW or JPEG image (12000 × 8000 pixels). This mode is ideal for tripod-mounted, static scenes and delivers much higher detail and more accurate color than a single exposure.

6K, 4K, and advanced recording options

The S5 IIX offers extensive video options:

  • Full-frame 6K 30p recording (4:2:0, 10-bit) for up to 30 minutes

  • Unlimited DCI and UHD 4K 60p recording (4:2:2, 10-bit)

  • High frame rate Full HD up to 120 fps and S&Q options up to 119.88 fps

Internally, it supports H.264/H.265/MOV/MP4, as well as ProRes and ALL-Intra recording for more efficient post-production workflows. ProRes can be recorded to compatible external SSDs via USB-C, which also improves backup and data management.

V-Log is included and provides a flat, neutral gamma curve with around 14+ stops of dynamic range, giving you extensive grading flexibility and easy intercutting with Panasonic VariCam footage.

To maintain low noise at higher ISOs, Dual Native ISO technology is used. Each pixel has two base circuits:

  • Low ISO circuit base values: ISO 100 (standard), ISO 640 (V-Log), ISO 400 (HLG), ISO 200 (Cinelike D2/V2)

  • Low Noise circuit base values: ISO 640 (standard), ISO 4000 (V-Log), ISO 2500 (HLG), ISO 1250 (Cinelike D2/V2)

Pro-level video and streaming functions

The S5 IIX adds pro options beyond the standard S5 II:

  • HDMI RAW video output

  • USB SSD recording and playback

  • ALL-Intra and ProRes internal recording

  • Wireless IP streaming, USB smartphone tethering, and wired IP streaming (RTP/RTSP) at resolutions from 3840 × 2160 to 1280 × 720 at 25p/29.97p/50p/59.94p

These features make the S5 IIX ideal for hybrid shooters, live producers, and creators working across multiple platforms and delivery formats.

Phase Hybrid AF system

The S5 IIX’s Phase Hybrid AF combines phase-detection and contrast-detection, using 779 phase points across the frame. This system is designed to prioritize dependability, tracking subjects in challenging situations such as low light, strong backlighting, and busy scenes with multiple moving people. It continuously maintains focus on your chosen subject whether you are shooting video or stills, even when other objects pass between camera and subject.

Dual I.S. 2 with Active I.S.

For handheld shooting, Dual I.S. 2 combines in-body 5-axis stabilization with compatible lens stabilization to deliver up to about 6.5 stops of compensation, helping keep images sharp at slower shutter speeds. For video, the Active I.S. mode enhances stabilization during camera movement, especially while walking, producing smoother handheld footage.

Body design and controls

  • L-Mount for full compatibility with L-Mount Alliance lenses and long-used anamorphic optics

  • 3.68M-dot OLED EVF with approx. 0.78x magnification and 60/120 fps refresh options

  • 3.0" 1.84M-dot free-angle tilting touchscreen LCD for flexible live view, playback, and menu navigation

  • 8-direction joystick and clean menu layout for efficient operation

  • USB-C port for high-speed data transfer and in-camera battery charging

  • Full-size HDMI-A port for secure monitor/recorder connections

  • 2.5 mm remote port (for optional DMW-RS2)

  • 3.5 mm headphone and microphone ports for professional audio monitoring and input

  • Dual UHS-II SD card slots for relay, backup, or split recording (RAW/JPEG or video/file separation)

  • Internal cooling fan designed to keep temperatures under control during long or unlimited recording sessions

  • Magnesium alloy body with dust- and splash-resistant construction for use in harsh conditions

  • Stealthy all-black finish, unique to the S5 IIX, for a low-profile, cinema-style appearance

Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity

  • In-camera USB PD charging when used with appropriate PD power sources

Panasonic Lumix S 70–300mm f/4.5–5.6 MACRO O.I.S. lens

The Lumix S 70–300mm f/4.5–5.6 MACRO O.I.S. is a telephoto zoom designed for full-frame L-Mount cameras. It is a versatile lens aimed at sports, action, wildlife, and macro-style telephoto work. The lens offers:

  • 70–300 mm focal range, suitable for distant subjects and compressed perspectives

  • Up to 0.5x macro capability at 300 mm for detailed close-ups

  • Optical Image Stabilization that works with Dual I.S. 2 to deliver up to 5.5 stops of stabilization

Internally, the lens uses 17 elements in 11 groups, designed to maintain sharpness and reduce aberrations throughout the zoom range. Zoom-position detection has been increased threefold for more precise telephoto tracking, and 240 Hz focus control improves zoom tracking accuracy up to eight times over some older designs.

Focus breathing is suppressed for smoother, more natural video, and the zoom and focus rings are tuned for precise, controlled operation. A zoom lock switch helps prevent lens creep when carrying the camera.

The lens is dust-, splash-, and freeze-resistant, making it suitable for outdoor use in challenging weather. Its rugged construction and O.I.S. support let photographers shoot handheld at longer focal lengths and lower shutter speeds than would otherwise be practical.

Key lens features

  • Optical Image Stabilization with support for Dual I.S. 2

  • Up to 5.5 stops of dual-axis stabilization (camera + lens)

  • 17 elements in 11 groups for high optical performance

  • 0.5x macro capability at 300 mm for close-up telephoto work

  • Smooth, controlled zoom and focus operation with reduced image shift when zooming

  • Focus breathing suppression for high-quality video

  • Dust-, splash-, and freeze-resistant design

  • Zoom lock switch to secure the zoom position during transport
