Description

The Panasonic Lumix S5 IIX is a second-generation full-frame mirrorless camera designed for professional content creators who need high-quality still images, advanced video features, and reliable livestreaming tools. It uses a newly designed sensor and an upgraded L2 image processing engine, making it the first Lumix camera to offer Phase Hybrid AF for very fast and precise autofocus. With its 24.2MP sensor and powerful processor, the camera can record 6K video for up to 30 minutes and offers unlimited 4K recording. Optimized for video, the S5 IIX also includes a new Active I.S. system that improves stabilization for handheld and walking shots during recording.

The S5 IIX is pre-configured with advanced video functions aimed at professional users. These include HDMI RAW video output, USB-SSD recording, ALL-Intra recording, and ProRes recording. Livestreaming is built in, with Wireless IP streaming, USB tethering to smartphones, and wired IP streaming all supported. This camera is also the first Lumix model to feature a fully stealthy, all-black exterior.

New Sensor and Processing Engine
The camera features an upgraded full-frame 24.2MP CMOS sensor and an improved L2 image processor. The sensor incorporates a newly developed Phase Hybrid AF system, a first in the Lumix lineup, offering 779 phase-detection points for much more reliable subject tracking. It balances high sensitivity with a wide dynamic range and provides a standard ISO range of 100–51,200, expandable to 50–204,800 for a wide variety of lighting conditions.

The S5 IIX is well suited for action and fast-moving subjects. It allows full-resolution continuous shooting at up to 9 fps with the mechanical shutter and up to 30 fps with the electronic shutter. It also uses sensor-shift image stabilization and offers a High Resolution mode that combines eight separate exposures into one 96MP raw or JPEG image. This mode is ideal for tripod work and static subjects, producing highly detailed, color-accurate images at 12,000 x 8,000 pixels.

6K and 4K Video Recording
In addition to its still image capabilities, the S5 IIX offers powerful video performance. It can record full-frame 6K 30p video with 4:2:0 10-bit color for up to 30 minutes. Unlimited recording is possible in DCI and UHD 4K 60p 4:2:2 10-bit modes. For slow motion, the camera supports 120p recording, allowing creators to produce smooth, high-resolution slow-motion footage. RAW HDMI output is available with an optional license upgrade.

V-Log is pre-installed on the camera and records a flat, neutral gamma curve, delivering more than 14 stops of dynamic range. This provides precise control over color and exposure in post-production and makes it easy to match footage with Panasonic VariCam cameras.

Drawing from Panasonic’s broadcast camera technology, Dual Native ISO helps maintain a balance of low noise and high sensitivity. Each pixel has two dedicated circuits:

  • A Low ISO circuit with base sensitivities of ISO 100 for normal use, ISO 640 with V-Log, ISO 400 with HLG, and ISO 200 with Cinelike D2/V2.

  • A Low Noise circuit with base sensitivities of ISO 640 for normal use, ISO 4000 with V-Log, ISO 2500 with HLG, and ISO 1250 with Cinelike D2/V2.

Pro-Level Video Features

  • HDMI RAW video data output for use with external recorders.

  • Support for recording and playback using an external SSD via USB for more efficient backup and workflow.

  • ALL-Intra and ProRes recording options for demanding professional editing pipelines.

  • Wireless IP streaming, USB tethering to smartphones, and wired IP streaming for modern content creation and live broadcasting.

Phase Hybrid AF System
The S5 IIX is the first Lumix mirrorless camera to use a Phase Hybrid AF system with 779 phase-detection points. This system delivers fast, accurate autofocus and is designed for reliability in situations that are typically challenging for conventional AF. It can track subjects effectively in six different types of difficult scenes, including backlit environments, low-light conditions, and frames with multiple people. Whether you are shooting still photos or video, the S5 IIX aims to keep the intended subject in sharp focus.

Dual I.S. 2 with Active I.S.
For handheld photography, the Dual I.S. 2 stabilization system compensates for approximately 6.5 stops of camera shake, helping to keep images sharp. For video recording, the newly developed Active I.S. system further enhances stabilization, especially during walking shots or when the camera is in motion.

Body Design
The camera uses the L-Mount system, shared by the L-Mount Alliance, with a 51.6mm mount diameter and 20mm flange distance. This allows compatibility with a wide range of lenses, including classic and modern anamorphic lenses used for many decades.

Key design and handling features include:

  • A 3.68 million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder with 0.78x magnification and selectable 60 fps or 120 fps refresh rates.

  • A 3.0" 1.84 million-dot LCD that is bright and clear for live view, playback, and menus. The free-angle design supports high, low, and front-facing shooting positions, and the touchscreen interface allows intuitive control.

  • An 8-direction joystick and a user-friendly menu system for quick operation.

  • A USB-C port for high-speed data transfer and in-camera battery charging.

  • A full-size HDMI-A port for video output, a 2.5mm port for the optional DMW-RS2 Remote Shutter, and 3.5mm microphone and headphone jacks for advanced audio setups.

  • Dual SD memory card slots, both UHS-II compatible, giving flexibility for separating raw and JPEG files, duplicating files for backup, or using overflow recording.

  • A built-in cooling fan (first introduced on the S5 II series) to keep internal temperatures under control and allow extended or effectively unlimited recording times.

  • A sturdy magnesium alloy body with dust- and splash-resistant construction, suitable for harsh shooting environments.

  • A refined, stealthy all-black design that emphasizes a professional, low-profile appearance.

Bluetooth and Wi-Fi
Bluetooth Low Energy (5.0) creates a constant, low-power connection with a smartphone or tablet. For faster transfers and remote functions, the camera also supports IEEE 802.11b/g/n and 802.11a/n/ac Wi-Fi. Paired with the Lumix Sync app for iOS and Android, the camera can be controlled remotely, images can be transferred wirelessly, and firmware can be updated.

Other Camera Features

  • Real-time LUT support for applying color grades directly in-camera.

  • Live cropping for in-frame panning and zooming during video recording.

  • Support for additional still image aspect ratios, including 65:24 and 2:1, alongside standard 3:2, 4:3, 1:1, and 16:9.

  • Color Shading Compensation to correct bluish or reddish color casts at the edges when certain older lenses are used.

  • Compatibility with Lumix Tether software for remote photo and video shooting via USB.

  • 4-channel 48 kHz or 96 kHz 24-bit audio recording with the optional DMW-XLR1 XLR microphone adapter.

Panasonic Lumix S 18–40mm f/4.5–6.3 Lens
The Lumix S 18–40mm is an ultra-compact and lightweight zoom lens, weighing approximately 0.34 lb, and is described as the world’s smallest and lightest zoom in its class. Its small size makes it an excellent everyday lens and a great choice for travel. The focal length range covers ultra-wide 18mm to a standard 40mm field of view, suitable for landscapes, architecture, interiors, and natural-looking snapshots. With a minimum focusing distance of 0.49 ft, it also allows for close-up shooting.

The lens is designed with video in mind and offers high video performance with reduced focus breathing, helping maintain a consistent framing when adjusting focus.

Key Characteristics of the 18–40mm Focal Range

  • 18mm ultra-wide angle: captures broad, expansive landscapes and large scenes.

  • 40mm standard view: ideal for natural-perspective snapshots and everyday scenes.

  • When paired with Hybrid Zoom on compatible bodies (such as the Lumix S9), it effectively covers a range out to 120mm.

Portable, Easy-to-Carry Design

  • Extremely compact dimensions of approximately 67.9 x 40.9 mm and a weight of about 0.34 lb.

  • Designed to match compact camera bodies like the Lumix S9, providing a well-balanced shooting setup.

Ideal for Both Video and Stills
The lens provides crisp, high-quality video and attractive bokeh for still photos, making it a flexible option for both types of shooting.

Durability and Coating

  • Dust-, splash-, and freeze-resistant construction, rated down to –10°C / 14°F, for use in demanding environments.

  • A fluorine coating on the front element reduces the adherence of oil and dirt, helping to keep the lens clean, which is particularly useful for close-up work.
(Weather sealing does not guarantee damage-free operation if the lens is directly exposed to large amounts of dust or water.)

Optical and Build Quality

  • Optical design of 8 elements in 7 groups, including 3 aspherical (ASPH) elements, 2 extra-low dispersion (ED) elements, and 1 ultra-high refractive index (UHR) element to minimize aberrations and maintain high resolution.

  • Designed to deliver sharpness and clarity across the entire zoom range, making it an excellent match for the Lumix full-frame system.
