The Sony Alpha a7 III is a versatile full-frame mirrorless camera designed for both photography and video in many different shooting environments. Its updated 24.2MP Exmor R back-illuminated CMOS sensor, paired with the BIONZ X image processor, delivers improved speed, better low-light performance, and cleaner image quality. The camera can shoot at up to 10 frames per second with continuous autofocus and auto exposure, making it suitable for capturing fast action. The enhanced Fast Hybrid AF system combines 693 phase-detection points with 425 contrast-detection areas for fast, accurate focus and dependable subject tracking across a wide area of the frame. Image quality is further improved through reduced noise across the ISO 100–51,200 range, which can be expanded to ISO 50–204,800. For video, the a7 III records high-quality UHD 4K using the full width of the full-frame sensor to reduce moiré and aliasing. A built-in 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE sensor-shift image stabilization system corrects camera shake by up to 5 stops for both stills and movies.

The camera body has also been refined for better handling and usability. 24.2MP Exmor R BSI CMOS Sensor and BIONZ X Processor

The full-frame 24.2MP Exmor R CMOS sensor uses a back-illuminated design to capture more light while maintaining high resolution and speed. Working together with the BIONZ X processor and a high-speed front-end LSI, it delivers high-resolution stills and video with reduced noise and improved responsiveness. The sensor’s gapless on-chip lens design and anti-reflective coating enhance light gathering and fine detail. A copper wiring layer speeds up data readout, enabling 14-bit still images and a native ISO range of 100–51,200, expandable to 50–204,800. This combination also allows internal UHD 4K recording with a wide dynamic range using the full width of the sensor, and supports up to about 15 stops of dynamic range at low ISO values.

Together, the sensor and processor allow continuous shooting at up to 10 fps at full resolution for up to 177 consecutive images, with full-time AF/AE, using either the mechanical shutter or electronic shutter. In live view, a continuous shooting rate of up to 8 fps is also possible.

Fast Hybrid Autofocus System

The a7 III’s advanced 4D FOCUS system combines 693 phase-detection points, covering roughly 93% of the image area, with 425 contrast-detection points. This system delivers fast, accurate autofocus and strong subject tracking performance, with roughly double the focusing speed and improved tracking compared with earlier a7 generations, including better results in low light. The phase-detection AF system also supports A-mount lenses via optional LA-EA3 or LA-EA1 adapters with full continuous AF/AE tracking.

The autofocus system supports a variety of features for higher precision and control:

• Lock-on AF keeps focus locked on moving subjects within a configurable focus frame.

• Expand Flexible Spot uses neighboring focus points to maintain focus even if the subject briefly moves off the selected point.

5-Axis SteadyShot INSIDE Image Stabilization

The a7 III features a built-in 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE image stabilization system with up to 5 stops of compensation. It corrects for:

• Pitch and yaw movements, especially noticeable at longer focal lengths

• Horizontal and vertical shift, important for macro and high-magnification shooting

• Roll, which affects all shooting styles

All five axes are stabilized at all times, even when using third-party lenses, adapters, or lenses that already have optical stabilization. This allows you to use a wide range of lenses while reducing blur from camera movement.

UHD 4K Video Recording in XAVC S

The a7 III can record UHD 4K video internally at up to 30 fps. It uses 2.4x oversampling and full pixel readout without pixel binning, which increases detail and reduces moiré and aliasing. Full-frame 4K quality has been significantly enhanced, especially at mid to high ISO settings, allowing you to fully use the sensor’s width. Full HD 1080p recording is available at up to 120 fps. Both resolutions use the XAVC S format (in an MP4 container) with 4:2:0 sampling and a maximum bitrate of 100 Mb/s. The 120 fps high-speed mode enables 4x or 5x slow-motion playback when recorded at 30p or 24p. For even higher quality, clean 4K with 4:2:2 sampling can be output via HDMI to an external recorder.
