Description

The Sony a7 V is a highly capable hybrid mirrorless camera designed to do a bit of everything and do it well. It delivers strong still-photo performance, advanced video features, and incorporates the latest AI-based subject recognition and autofocus technology from Sony’s flagship models. A true workhorse for content creators, it is built to handle fast action photography, daily vlogging, and full multimedia coverage of events without feeling oversized or overcomplicated.

New partially stacked sensor and upgraded processing

33MP Exmor RS CMOS full-frame sensor
The a7 V is the first Sony camera to use a partially stacked full-frame sensor. This 33MP Exmor RS CMOS sensor offers faster readout, reduced rolling shutter, and better overall responsiveness compared to the a7 IV. Working together with a new processor, it delivers flagship-level advantages such as more advanced subject tracking, improved continuous shooting performance, cleaner images, and up to 16 stops of dynamic range. The sensor has a native ISO range of 100–51,200 and supports a top electronic shutter speed of 1/16,000 second thanks to its partially stacked design.

BIONZ XR2 processor
The new BIONZ XR2 processor increases speed and overall performance and includes a dedicated AI unit for improved autofocus behavior, more accurate color, and more consistent auto white balance across sequences of images.

The increased processing power also enables blackout-free continuous shooting at up to 30 fps with full-time AF and AE, 7K oversampled 4K 60p recording using the full sensor, and high-speed 4K 120p recording from a Super 35 (APS-C) crop.

Pre-Capture and Speed Boost

The a7 V includes new timing tools to help you catch decisive moments more reliably.

  • Pre-Capture: When enabled, the camera starts buffering images as soon as you half-press the shutter. You can set the pre-capture window between 0.03 and 1.0 second. When you fully press the shutter, the buffered frames are written to the memory card, helping you capture moments that might otherwise be missed.

  • Speed Boost: This function can be assigned to a function button and allows you to instantly jump from your usual continuous shooting speed to a faster burst rate, up to 30 fps, for critical action moments.

Selectable raw file types and Composite RAW

The sensor and processor also add more flexibility when working with raw files:

  • You can choose between Compressed HQ raw, lossless compressed raw, and a new lightweight raw format, depending on whether you want maximum quality, editing headroom, or smaller file sizes for faster workflows and reduced storage use.

  • Extended raw processing and more advanced compositing are available via the Imaging Edge desktop application.

  • Composite RAW lets you capture and combine 4, 8, or 16 sequential images (taken at 30 fps) into a single HDR-style file with reduced noise, especially useful at higher ISO settings.

Image stabilization

  • The 5-axis in-body image stabilization (IBIS) system compensates for up to 7.5 stops of camera shake in the center of the frame and up to 6.5 stops toward the edges.

  • For video, Dynamic Active stabilization adds electronic correction on top of IBIS, providing smoother footage during walking, running, or handheld tracking shots.

Upgraded autofocus and AI subject recognition

Autofocus is one of the major areas of improvement in the a7 V. Borrowing from top-tier models, it uses an AI Processing Unit plus refined subject detection and tracking algorithms.

  • The phase-detection AF system still uses 759 points covering about 94% of the image area and can focus down to -4 EV, but subject recognition is faster and more intelligent. In particular, animal and bird detection is about 30–50% quicker than on the a7 IV.

  • A dedicated AI Processing Unit—originally seen in the a7R V, a9 III, and a1 II—provides advanced, responsive tracking of humans, animals, birds, insects, cars, trains, and airplanes.

  • Human pose estimation analyzes body and head positions for more reliable focus in portrait, sports, and event photography, with Real-time Eye AF prioritizing sharp focus on detected eyes.

  • The camera can distinguish multiple people in the frame and maintain focus on the chosen subject, even if someone briefly walks in front of them.

  • Real-time Tracking uses AI-based subject recognition to keep moving subjects in focus, making it especially effective for sports and fast action.

  • Auto Subject Recognition eliminates the need to manually select a subject type in many situations, letting the camera automatically detect and track the appropriate subject.

  • New XS and XL focus spot sizes give more flexibility for focusing on very small or very large subjects, and you can customize AF areas for uniquely shaped targets.

  • Full-time DMF (Direct Manual Focus) lets you turn the focus ring at any time to manually override or refine focus, even when AF is active.

Video recording

7K oversampled 4K recording

  • UHD 4K 60p XAVC HS 10-bit recording is possible using the full width of the sensor. This uses 7K full pixel readout to produce detailed, sharp footage with a natural look.

  • Switching to a Super 35 (APS-C) crop mode allows high-frame-rate recording up to UHD 4K 120p or Full HD 240p for smooth slow-motion sequences.

Recording flexibility

  • Efficient heat management, including a specially designed Sigma-shaped graphite heatsink integrated into the stabilization unit, helps maintain stable performance for longer recording sessions.

  • Breathing Compensation minimizes the visible change in angle of view when shifting focus, supported with select lenses.

  • AI-based subject recognition assists the Framing Stabilizer mode, which can automatically crop and adjust composition to keep the subject in a stable position within the frame.

  • The camera supports internal 24-bit audio recording and up to 4-channel audio when used with compatible external microphones.

  • A built-in audio reference mic assists with noise reduction, and a wind-noise reduction control can be enabled when using the internal microphone.

Advanced color and tone control

  • S-Cinetone provides a cinematic look with pleasing color, natural mid-tones, attractive skin tones, and well-controlled highlights. It is designed to match the look of many FX-series and Alpha-series cameras and is based on Sony’s Cinema Line, including VENICE.

  • S-Log3 is available for capturing a 15+ stop dynamic range, giving more flexibility for grading in the shadows and mid-tones.

  • Users can import and apply custom LUTs via Creators’ Cloud for accurate on-camera monitoring while recording.

Body design and connectivity

3.68m-dot EVF and 4-axis multi-angle LCD

  • The a7 V introduces a 4-axis multi-angle LCD, combining the advantages of both traditional tilting screens and side-opening vari-angle designs.

  • The 3.2" 2.1M-dot touchscreen LCD supports a wide DCI-P3 color gamut for more accurate color preview.

  • A Quad VGA OLED electronic viewfinder with 3.68M dots and 0.78x magnification offers a bright, detailed eye-level view.

  • The EVF supports up to 120 fps display for smoother motion tracking and its brightness and color settings can be adjusted.

Versatile and durable design

  • Dual card slots: one CFexpress Type A / SD UHS-II combination slot and one SD UHS-II slot. This allows for flexible recording setups, such as separating file types or using one card as overflow or backup.

  • The camera uses the NP-FZ100 high-capacity battery, providing approximately 630 shots per charge when using the EVF or about 750 shots with the rear LCD—around a 23% improvement over the a7 IV.

  • The magnesium alloy body offers strength and stability while remaining lightweight. The lens mount has been reinforced to support heavier lenses, and the grip has been reshaped for improved comfort and security.

  • Extensive weather sealing, including around the battery door, terminal covers, and key joints, protects against dust and moisture for reliable shooting in harsh conditions.

Ports and interface

  • A full-size HDMI Type A port provides a more robust connection for external recorders and monitors.

  • Dual USB-C ports increase flexibility and allow you to power or charge the camera while simultaneously transferring files to external storage.

    • Port 1: USB-C 3.2 Gen 2, supporting data transfer up to 10 Gbps.

    • Port 2: USB-C 2.0, intended primarily for power delivery and in-camera charging.

  • 3.5 mm headphone and microphone jacks offer more precise control over audio monitoring and recording.

  • The Multi Interface Shoe supports digital audio accessories, such as the ECM-B1M Shotgun Microphone or XLR-K3M adapter, which transmit a digital audio signal directly to the camera for cleaner sound compared to analog inputs.

Connectivity

  • Built-in Wi-Fi with support for 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands and 2x2 MIMO provides a strong, stable connection for fast transfers, remote control, and wireless tethered shooting.

  • Bluetooth connectivity can be used for acquiring location data and other linked functions.

  • The camera supports 4K webcam use and complies with UVC/UAC standards for simple plug-and-play streaming, and internal recording is available while live streaming.

  • Imaging Edge Remote for desktop supports tethered shooting over Wi-Fi or via the wired USB-C connection. Enhanced transfer control also allows you to move files from the SD card to a mobile device using the Imaging Edge Mobile app, even when the camera is powered off.
