Description

The Sony Alpha a6400 is a compact APS-C mirrorless camera that brings many high-end features from Sony’s full-frame line into a smaller, more portable body. It offers autofocus acquisition as fast as 0.02 seconds, Real-time Eye AF and Real-time Tracking, high-speed continuous shooting up to 11 fps (with AF/AE), silent shooting up to 8 fps, an upgraded BIONZ X image processor, a 180° tilting touchscreen, UHD 4K video with full pixel readout and no pixel binning, and in-camera interval recording for time-lapse videos.

Built around a 24.2MP Exmor APS-C CMOS sensor and the BIONZ X processor, the a6400 delivers clean, detailed images across a wide sensitivity range from ISO 100 to 32,000 (expandable to 102,400 for stills). Fast readout enables internal 4K30 and Full HD 1080p120 recording with full pixel readout. The S&Q (Slow & Quick) Motion setting allows Full HD capture from 1–120 fps for speed-ramped clips, while HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) supports HDR workflows and S-Log2/S-Log3 profiles provide wide dynamic range and grading flexibility. For stills, the processing power supports bursts up to 11 fps for about 116 JPEG or 46 RAW images, and 14-bit RAW output is available.

The sensor and processor combination also power a 425-point phase-detection and 425-point contrast-detection AF system spread across approximately 84% of the frame. This system enables fast, precise focusing and supports Real-time Eye AF and Real-time Tracking. Real-time Eye AF detects and tracks a subject’s eye automatically in real time, while Real-time Tracking uses AI-based recognition to follow subjects based on colour, pattern, and distance information for reliable focus during action.

The a6400’s magnesium-alloy body is robust and includes anti-dust protection for the optical filter. A 2.36M-dot XGA Tru-Finder OLED EVF offers bright, clear eye-level viewing with a 120 fps mode for smooth tracking of moving subjects. The 3.0" 921.6k-dot LCD touchscreen tilts 180° up and 74° down, making it ideal for self-recording and difficult angles. Touch functionality allows touch-to-focus, touch tracking, and touch shutter operation. Built-in Wi-Fi with NFC enables wireless image transfer and remote control via mobile devices.

Fast Autofocus and Real-Time Tracking

The a6400’s AF system inherits technology from Sony’s full-frame models like the a9, a7R III, and a7 III. It features:

  • 425 phase-detection points

  • 425 contrast-detection points

  • Coverage of roughly 84% of the frame

Working together with the BIONZ X processor, this system can lock focus in as little as 0.02 seconds and track fast or erratic subjects with high reliability.

Real-time Eye AF uses AI-based object recognition to identify eyes and maintain focus on them automatically. In any AF mode, Eye AF can engage with a half-press of the shutter, and in AF-C or AF-A you can specify left eye, right eye, or auto selection. A custom function can be assigned to quickly switch between eyes for greater control over portrait compositions.

Real-time Tracking uses AI and scene data (colour, pattern, depth, and facial/eye details) to follow subjects accurately. Activated via a half-press of the shutter or an assigned button, it keeps the focus locked even as subjects move unpredictably.

In terms of speed, the camera can:

  • Shoot up to 11 fps with AF/AE using the mechanical shutter

  • Shoot up to 8 fps with AF/AE in silent mode

These speeds can be maintained for up to 116 JPEG or 46 compressed RAW frames, giving you a high chance of capturing the perfect moment.

Improved Image Quality

The a6400’s 24.2MP APS-C sensor and improved BIONZ X processor deliver:

  • Standard ISO up to 32,000 for stills and video (expandable to 102,400 for stills)

  • Enhanced noise reduction at medium and high sensitivities

  • Better texture and detail rendering, benefiting from algorithms derived from Sony’s full-frame cameras

This ensures sharp images with pleasing colour and reduced noise across a wide range of lighting conditions.

4K Video and Advanced Movie Features

The a6400 is also a strong video camera:

  • Records 4K UHD (3840 × 2160) internally using full pixel readout and no pixel binning, oversampling roughly 2.4x more data than required for 4K, resulting in detailed, high-quality footage.

  • Fast Hybrid AF keeps subjects in smooth, consistent focus during video, even when objects pass in front of the camera.

  • S&Q mode captures Full HD at 1–120 fps, allowing for both slow-motion and quick-motion effects in-camera.

  • Built-in interval recording supports time-lapse creation with intervals from 1–60 seconds and up to 9999 shots. Exposure tracking sensitivity (AE) can be set to High, Mid, or Low, reducing abrupt exposure changes during timelapse sequences.

  • HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) picture profile supports instant HDR workflows on compatible displays.

  • S-Log2 and S-Log3 gamma curves are available for advanced colour grading. Additional tools include Zebra, Gamma Display Assist, and proxy recording.

  • Full HD 1080p can be recorded at up to 120 fps and up to 100 Mb/s, making it suitable for 4x or 5x slow-motion editing with AF tracking preserved.

Video clip duration is limited to approximately 29 minutes per clip.

Ergonomics, Customisation, and Build

The a6400 is designed to support flexible shooting styles:

  • 3.0" 180° tilting LCD, ideal for selfies and vlogging.

  • Touch Pad, Touch Focus, Touch Shutter, and Touch Tracking functions for intuitive control.

  • XGA OLED Tru-Finder EVF with high resolution and 100% coverage.

  • Extensive customisation with up to 89 functions assignable to 8 custom keys, plus My Dial and My Menu options.

  • Improved menu usability, built-in help screens for menu items, and in-camera star rating for easier image management.

  • Durable magnesium-alloy chassis with a shutter mechanism rated for approximately 200,000 cycles.

  • Seamless file transfer to smartphones or tablets via the Imaging Edge Mobile app.

Sony 90mm f/2.8 G Macro Lens

The Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS is a full-frame macro lens with a true 1:1 magnification ratio, designed for high-resolution close-up work on E-mount cameras. As a G-series lens, it aims to balance sharpness and smooth background blur. Special optical elements help deliver high detail while minimising aberrations, and a Nano AR coating reduces flare and ghosting.

The constant f/2.8 maximum aperture gives good control over depth of field and supports low-light shooting. For critical macro work, the Direct Drive Super Sonic Wave Motor provides fast, quiet, and accurate autofocus. A focus hold button and focus range limiter are included to optimise performance for different distances. The focus ring can be slid back and forth to switch quickly between AF and MF. Built-in Optical SteadyShot stabilisation helps counteract camera shake at all focusing distances, especially useful during handheld macro work.

Godox ML150II Macro Ring Flash

The Godox ML-150 II Macro Ring Flash is designed to provide soft, even illumination for close-up photography. It consists of a controller unit that mounts on the camera’s hot shoe and a ring flash that fits around the front of the lens. Included adapter rings (49, 52, 55, 58, 62, 67, 72, and 77 mm) allow it to work with many lenses.

Key benefits:

  • Encircles the lens for shadowless lighting and moderate contrast, revealing fine detail without harshness.

  • Produces attractive circular catchlights in the eyes.

  • Suitable for macro subjects such as insects, flowers, food, and technical or dental photography.

  • Eleven levels of manual brightness adjustment for precise control.

  • User-friendly interface with simple controls, reducing the need for complex menu navigation.

  • Powered by four AA batteries, providing approximately 300–1000 flashes depending on power level.

  • Single-contact hot shoe for broad camera compatibility.
