iOptron Mount HAE29C-EC AZ/EQ dual SWG (86661)

With the HAE series, iOptron presents a mount that uses dual strain wave gearing on both axes, eliminating the need for heavy counterweights and a bulky counterweight shaft. Payload capacity can still be increased by adding optional counterweights when required. The black anodized, CNC-machined metal housing combines a refined appearance with a rigid and durable mechanical platform, suitable for demanding astronomical use. A distinctive feature is the electronic friction brake, which immediately stops all mount movement if the power supply is accidentally interrupted.

Description

With the HAE series, iOptron presents a mount that uses dual strain wave gearing on both axes, eliminating the need for heavy counterweights and a bulky counterweight shaft. Payload capacity can still be increased by adding optional counterweights when required.

The black anodized, CNC-machined metal housing combines a refined appearance with a rigid and durable mechanical platform, suitable for demanding astronomical use.

A distinctive feature is the electronic friction brake, which immediately stops all mount movement if the power supply is accidentally interrupted. Once power is restored, the mount automatically recalibrates and accurately determines its position.

The HAE mount supports computer-based control, either through ASCOM and Commander software on Windows systems or via third-party INDI drivers for macOS.

HAE models are identified by a “B” or “C” designation in the product name, such as HAE43B or HAE43C.
C models include an internal mainboard with integrated Wi-Fi, allowing wireless control via smartphone or tablet using the iOptron Commander Lite app, astronomy applications such as SkySafari, or a Raspberry Pi running an INDI driver.
B models are equipped with the iOptron iMate Control Box, featuring 32 GB of built-in eMMC memory and a microSD card slot supporting up to 64 GB of additional storage. The iMate can record an entire night of imaging data and is compatible with Windows, iOS, Linux, and Android. A HAE29B mount can also be controlled directly from a computer through the USB-C port on the mount base using ASCOM or third-party INDI drivers.

For users who prefer handheld operation, the optional Go2Nova® 8411 controller is available.

All HAE versions include USB and 12 V power ports on the saddle, improving cable management. A carrying case is supplied, along with a power supply rated at DC 12 V, 5 A (5.5/2.1 mm DC connector).

The HAE29-EC version features a high-precision right ascension encoder, delivering exceptional tracking accuracy. In many cases, this precision allows astrophotographers to image without the use of an autoguider.

Is the encoder version worth the additional cost?
This is a common question among astrophotographers considering a strain wave mount. A precision encoder on an iOptron HAE hybrid azimuth/equatorial mount provides several key advantages for high-precision imaging:

Outstanding tracking accuracy, with right ascension tracking errors of less than one arcsecond, ideal for long-exposure astrophotography
Significant reduction of periodic error, as real-time encoder feedback compensates for the inherent mechanical errors of strain wave gears, eliminating the need for PEC
Guiding-free imaging capability, thanks to encoder precision that removes the requirement for an autoguider in many setups
Improved performance with heavy payloads, maintaining precise control even without counterweights
Closed-loop feedback operation, where the mount continuously corrects its position using encoder data, acting as a fast internal control system and complementing autoguiding if used

Whether the EC version is worth it is a personal decision, but market trends clearly show increasing demand for strain wave mounts equipped with precision encoders.
