Omegon Filters Pro Veil OIII 3nm 2'' (82014)
Artificial lighting in urban and suburban areas brightens the night sky and reduces contrast, making faint deep-sky objects more difficult to observe. Skyglow caused by streetlights and industrial lighting often overwhelms delicate nebular structures. Unlike galaxies, globular clusters or reflection nebulae, emission nebulae radiate light at specific wavelengths. Because the human eye has limited sensitivity in the red spectrum, only the O-III and H-Beta lines are easily visible visually. Cameras, however, can record all these wavelengths, including the deeper red emissions.

Description
Omegon Filters Pro Veil OIII 3 nm 2" (82014)
Artificial lighting in urban and suburban areas brightens the night sky and reduces contrast, making faint deep-sky objects more difficult to observe. Skyglow caused by streetlights and industrial lighting often overwhelms delicate nebular structures.
Unlike galaxies, globular clusters or reflection nebulae, emission nebulae radiate light at specific wavelengths. The strongest emission lines include:
-
H-Alpha: 656.3 nm
-
H-Beta: 486.1 nm
-
O-III: 495.9 nm and 500.7 nm
-
S-II: 671.7 nm and 673.1 nm
Because the human eye has limited sensitivity in the red spectrum, only the O-III and H-Beta lines are easily visible visually. Cameras, however, can record all these wavelengths, including the deeper red emissions.
The Omegon Pro Veil OIII 3 nm filter is a high-performance narrowband filter designed specifically for isolating the two OIII emission lines at 495.9 nm and 500.7 nm. With a very narrow bandwidth of 3 nm, it provides strong suppression of artificial light pollution while transmitting the OIII lines with very high efficiency.
This narrow half-width increases contrast significantly compared to wider-band filters. It is particularly effective for enhancing supernova remnants and planetary nebulae, where OIII emission dominates. The filter can be used under light-polluted skies as well as in dark locations.
The recommended application range covers telescopes with an aperture of 6 inches (150 mm) or larger at focal ratios from f/3 to f/15 for visual observation at medium magnification. For astrophotography, it is suitable for lenses and telescopes of virtually any aperture.
How It Works
The filter blocks emission lines from common artificial light sources, including mercury (Hg) and sodium (Na) lamps, as well as natural airglow. At the same time, it allows the two OIII lines to pass through with very high transmission, significantly improving contrast between the nebula and the sky background.
