Omegon Filters Pro Veil H-Alpha 3nm 2'' (82012)

Artificial lighting in urban and suburban areas brightens the night sky and reduces contrast, causing faint celestial objects to fade into the background. While streetlights improve visibility on the ground, they create skyglow that makes observing delicate nebular structures more challenging. Emission nebulae differ from galaxies, globular clusters and reflection nebulae because they emit light at specific wavelengths rather than across a broad spectrum.

Description

Omegon Filters Pro Veil H-Alpha 3 nm 2" (82012)

Artificial lighting in urban and suburban areas brightens the night sky and reduces contrast, causing faint celestial objects to fade into the background. While streetlights improve visibility on the ground, they create skyglow that makes observing delicate nebular structures more challenging.

Emission nebulae differ from galaxies, globular clusters and reflection nebulae because they emit light at specific wavelengths rather than across a broad spectrum. The most prominent emission lines include:

  • H-Alpha: 656.3 nm

  • H-Beta: 486.1 nm

  • O-III: 495.9 nm and 500.7 nm

  • S-II: 671.7 nm and 673.1 nm

Due to the limited sensitivity of the human eye in the red part of the spectrum, H-Alpha emissions are not easily visible visually. However, cameras can capture these wavelengths effectively, revealing intricate structures within emission nebulae.

The Omegon Pro Veil H-Alpha 3 nm filter is a narrowband filter designed to isolate the H-Alpha line at 656.3 nm. With a very narrow bandwidth of 3 nm, it significantly reduces artificial light pollution while transmitting the H-Alpha emission with high efficiency. This makes it particularly effective for high-contrast astrophotography, even under heavily light-polluted skies.

By selectively passing only the H-Alpha wavelength, the filter enhances fine details and improves contrast in emission nebulae such as the Veil Nebula or the North America Nebula.
