TMS-Astro Polar Wedge EQ Platform Visual 50°–55° (Model 86631)
The TMS-Astro EQ platform allows an azimuth-mounted Dobsonian telescope to function like a parallactic (equatorial) mount. By tilting the mount so that the azimuth axis becomes parallel to the Earth’s rotational axis, the platform compensates for Earth’s rotation through continuous movement along a single axis. This enables smooth tracking of celestial objects. The entire Dobsonian telescope is placed directly on the inclined platform, which must be matched to the geographical latitude of the observing location.
TMS-Astro platforms stand out due to their advanced features and thoughtful design elements not typically found in comparable systems. They are available in two versions: a visual version (suitable for observation and short exposures) and a photographic version equipped with an additional declination drive that can be controlled via an autoguider. This model is the visual version and is optimized for locations between 50° and 55° latitude. EQ platforms are manufactured in 5° latitude intervals to ensure accurate alignment for specific observing regions.
In visual mode, once powered on, the upper plate automatically moves to its starting position and tracking begins. After the tracking period ends, an acoustic signal sounds and the system pauses for 12 seconds. If no button is pressed during this time, the platform automatically resets to the starting position and tracking restarts. Alternatively, the reset can be initiated manually by pressing and holding the white button for at least two seconds.
For polar alignment, the integrated compass and spirit level assist with initial positioning. When the bubble is centered, the platform is aligned within the working range of the segment. Adjustable feet allow fine-tuning of the polar angle: raise the front (pole-facing) feet or lower the rear feet to increase the angle. Once aligned, place the telescope on the platform and switch it on using the control unit. The platform returns to its starting position and begins tracking automatically.
