The ZWO AM3N Harmonic Equatorial Mount is a lightweight and highly portable solution designed for astrophotography. Weighing only 4.1 kg, it can carry telescopes up to 8 kg without counterweights. When using an optional counterweight and counterweight bar, the load capacity increases to 13 kg. This advanced mount is the result of several years of development and incorporates patented harmonic drive technology.

Equatorial and Altazimuth Operation

The AM3N can operate in both equatorial and altazimuth modes. For astrophotography, equatorial mode is used and requires accurate polar alignment. For visual observing or lunar and planetary imaging, altazimuth mode is sufficient and allows quick setup within minutes. A built-in status indicator shows the current mode: red for equatorial and green for altazimuth.

Harmonic Drive – No Counterweights Required

Traditional German equatorial mounts require counterweights for proper balance. The AM3N uses harmonic drive (strain wave) technology derived from robotics, allowing operation without counterweights for telescopes up to 8 kg. This design makes the mount more compact, lighter, and easier to handle. Counterweights are recommended only when using heavier optical systems to maintain optimal balance.

Precision Tracking Performance

Each AM3N mount is individually tested before delivery and guaranteed to have a periodic error (PE) of less than ±20 arcseconds. The periodic error occurs slowly, giving autoguiding systems sufficient time to correct it. The mount includes an ST-4 autoguider interface, and periodic error correction can also be optimized electronically using compatible software.

Designed for Global Use

As a true travel mount, the AM3N is suitable for use anywhere in the world, from the equator to the poles. Its compact size allows it to fit easily into airline luggage.

Wireless Control and Smart Integration

All mount functions can be controlled wirelessly via smartphone. The AM3N integrates seamlessly with ASIAIR, enabling full system control—including camera operation, autoguiding, and mount movement—through a smartphone or tablet. A wireless hand controller is also included for operation without a smartphone.
