Description

ZWO Mount AM3N Harmonic Equatorial + Tripod TC40 (87229)

This complete set includes:

  • ZWO AM3N Harmonic Equatorial Mount

  • ZWO TC40 Tripod for AM3 / AM5 / AM7

Portable Harmonic Equatorial Mount for Astrophotography

The AM3N is a highly transportable equatorial mount designed for astrophotography. The mount head weighs just over 4 kg and supports telescopes up to 8 kg without counterweights. With an optional counterweight and counterweight bar (not included), the payload capacity increases to 13 kg. Years of development and patented harmonic drive technology have gone into this innovative mount.

Flexible Operation Modes

The mount can operate in equatorial or altazimuth mode. Equatorial mode is used for astrophotography and requires accurate polar alignment. For visual observing or lunar and planetary imaging, altazimuth mode is sufficient and allows rapid setup within minutes. A built-in LED indicator displays the active mode: red for equatorial and green for altazimuth.

Harmonic Drive – No Counterweights Required

Unlike traditional German equatorial mounts that rely on counterweights, the AM3N uses harmonic strain wave gearing derived from robotics technology. This allows telescopes up to 8 kg to be used without counterweights, resulting in a lighter, more compact, and user-friendly system. Counterweights are recommended only for heavier optical setups to maintain balance.

Reliable Tracking Accuracy

Each mount is individually tested and guaranteed to deliver a periodic error (PE) of less than ±20 arcseconds. The error develops slowly, allowing autoguiding systems sufficient time for correction. The mount includes an ST-4 autoguider interface, and additional electronic periodic error correction can be applied via compatible software.

Ideal for Travel

The AM3N is suitable for use worldwide, from equatorial regions to polar latitudes. Its compact size makes it easy to transport in airline luggage, making it an excellent choice for traveling astrophotographers.

Wireless Control and Smart Integration

All mount functions can be controlled wirelessly via smartphone. The system integrates seamlessly with ASIAIR, enabling full control of camera, autoguiding, and mount operation through a mobile app. A wireless hand controller is also included, allowing operation without a smartphone.

AM3N – Updated Features

  • Improved cable management with additional power connections and a USB Type-C port integrated into the saddle

  • Enhanced azimuth adjustment knob with tool-friendly hex key access for easier fine adjustment

  • Magnetic Allen key holder for secure tool storage

  • Slight weight increase from 3.9 kg to 4.1 kg due to structural improvements

  • Updated power consumption for improved load stability:

    • Tracking mode: 12V / 0.7A

    • GoTo mode: 12V / 1.3A (up to 1.8A under high load)

  • Expanded operating temperature range from -20°C to +40°C for reliable performance in cold conditions

TC40 Carbon Tripod

The included TC40 tripod is lightweight yet extremely stable. Made from carbon fiber, it supports loads up to 50 kg while weighing only 2.3 kg. The tripod height is adjustable from 47 cm to 80 cm, with a compact transport length of 50 cm. This makes it an ideal companion for mobile use. A tripod bag is not included.
