The Erg Chech 002 meteorite, also known as EC 002, was discovered in May 2020 in the Erg Chech region of the Sahara Desert in southwestern Algeria (Adrar province). It has a total mass of 31.78 kg and is classified as an ungrouped achondrite. Its metamorphic history and crystallization age are estimated at 4.566 billion years, making it one of the oldest materials known. EC 002 is believed to be a fragment of the crust from a small protoplanet that existed during the formation of our solar system.

The material of this meteorite is similar to terrestrial andesite, also called islandite, which is a volcanic rock in the magmatic rock group. As a result, this meteorite is considered the oldest known volcanic or even basaltic rock on Earth as of 2021.
