The Erg Chech 002 meteorite, also known as EC 002, was discovered in May 2020 in the Erg Chech region of the Sahara Desert in southwestern Algeria (Adrar province). With a total mass of 31.78 kg, it is classified as an ungrouped achondrite. Geological analysis estimates its metamorphic and crystallization age at 4.566 billion years, making it one of the oldest materials ever found. This meteorite is believed to be a fragment of the crust from a small protoplanet formed during the earliest days of our solar system.

The material of Erg Chech 002 closely resembles terrestrial andesite, also known as islandite—a volcanic rock belonging to the magmatic rock group. Because of its composition and age, EC 002 is considered the oldest known volcanic or even basaltic rock on Earth as of 2021.
