The Sky-Watcher AZ-EQ5 mount is a computerized hybrid mount equipped with a SynScan GoTo controller, dual-axis drive with encoders, and a stable tripod.

The AZ-EQ5 is based on the larger AZ-EQ6 model and is a major redesign of the well-known and proven HEQ-5. Compared to the AZ-EQ6, this mount is noticeably lighter and more portable, while still offering a payload capacity suitable for advanced astrophotography. Its maximum payload is 15 kg. Thanks to several innovative design elements, it is considered one of the most interesting options in its price range. Key distinguishing features include hybrid stepper motors and the ability to operate in both equatorial and alt-azimuth modes.

The AZ-EQ5 includes a USB port (instead of older RS-232 connectors), an autoguider port, and a camera-control port for DSLR triggering. As with the AZ-EQ6, the counterweight bar can be replaced with a second saddle in alt-azimuth mode, allowing two optical tubes to be mounted simultaneously on opposite ends of the same axis (using Vixen-type dovetail mounts). Ergonomics have been carefully improved: adjustment screws are large and comfortable, and polar-axis adjustments can be done by hand with minimal effort.

A significant control-system feature is the dual encoder mechanism, which tracks the telescope’s position in both axes independently of the motor drive. This “Freedom Find” system allows manual movement of the telescope without losing GoTo alignment.

The mount can track objects at sidereal, solar, and lunar rates. Its performance can be further enhanced with PEC (Periodic Error Correction) and PAE (Pointing Accuracy Enhancement). The RA worm gear includes a special reference mark that makes PEC calibration more accurate. The PEC profile is stored in internal memory and can be used at any time (referred to as PPEC – Permanent Period Error Correction).

The system includes features that simplify polar alignment. The built-in USB port allows direct computer control without adapters, and the supplied RS-232 cable is used for firmware updates. SynScan also supports an optional GPS module for precise time and location data.

The mount weighs 14 kg and comes with two 3.5 kg counterweights. Useful optional accessories include a polar alignment scope and a 12 V power supply (a car-lighter power cable is included by default).

A GPS module is recommended for all SynScan GoTo mounts to enable fully automatic and hands-free input of location and accurate observation time.
