Description
Prism rails, also known as dovetail bars, serve as the primary means for mounting telescopes onto astronomical mounts. Additionally, these rails are frequently utilized to secure additional accessories to the telescope's optical tube, such as an internal focuser or a camera.
In astronomy, there are two established standards: the relatively narrow rails pioneered by the Japanese manufacturer Vixen and the wider Losmandy rails, which measure 3 inches in width and are primarily intended for supporting heavy optics. From the realm of photography, the Arca-Swiss standard is also recognized for clamping to camera tripods.
Most astronomical mounts adhere to one of these two standards. Medium-sized mounts and larger often feature a dual mounting saddle capable of accommodating both standards.
