OIII filters selectively allow light with a wavelength of 501 nanometers, corresponding to the spectrum lines of double ionized oxygen, to pass through. These lines are emitted by planetary nebulae and some emission nebulae, enabling these objects to remain visible while other wavelengths are blocked by the filter. This enhances contrast and reveals faint nebulae that may not have been visible otherwise.

In astrophotography, these filters are optimally paired with monochrome cameras. Ideally, images captured using these filters should be combined with those taken with H-alpha and SII filters. This combination produces images that depict faint nebulae clearly and with high contrast.
