With the Sky Quality Meter, discerning the background brightness of the night sky becomes an objective task achievable in seconds. This compact device, designed for ease of use, slips effortlessly into any pocket. It facilitates straightforward comparisons between observing locations, aiding in the selection of prime spots for astronomical endeavors.

Unlike subjective assessments, which can be swayed by observer experience, physical condition, and visual acuity, the Sky Quality Meter operates independently of these variables.

Essentially a photometric tool, the device utilizes a built-in diode to measure sky brightness, presenting results in red numerals in mag/square arcsec on its display. Upon pressing the red button, the device swiftly completes measurements within 8 seconds, emitting tones at one-second intervals. Measurement is confined to the visible spectrum, accompanied by temperature readings in Celsius or Fahrenheit.

Beyond its primary function in sky brightness assessment, the SQM finds utility in various projects. For instance, it can track changes in light pollution over time at specific locations. Furthermore, it facilitates not only comparisons between observing sites but also discerns variations in sky quality across different nights at the same location.

The SQM-L Version:

The SQM-L variant features a built-in lens, offering localized measurement within a 20° angle. This enables precise measurement even in small sections of the sky. It allows for detecting differences in brightness between the horizon and zenith, as well as in various directions.
