Description
The SMZ-171 Stereo Zoom Microscope is an advanced addition to Motic’s established SMZ Stereo series. This model introduces improved optics, new materials for ESD compatibility, and optimized LED illumination, making it a versatile tool for a wide variety of biological and material science applications. Its high optical performance and expanded accessory options make it suitable for both routine and research tasks. Whether used for biological and medical preparations or industrial quality control and inspection, the SMZ-171 consistently delivers clear, distortion-free images.
The microscope uses the Greenough optical system, offering a large zoom range of 6.7:1 and maintaining parfocality at all magnifications. A 5-position click-stop mechanism within the continuous zoom system allows for precise and repeatable magnification settings, which is especially useful for measurements. The standard working distance is 110mm, providing ample space for viewing and manipulating samples. Enhanced depth-of-field ensures sharp, three-dimensional upright images. The SMZ-171 can also be easily converted into a documentation station by pairing it with a Moticam camera.

Zoom Range
Switching from a macro overview to micro details is simple with the SMZ-171. The 6.7:1 zoom ratio provides a standard magnification range of 7.5x to 50x. The system is parfocal, so focus does not need to be readjusted while zooming. Auxiliary objectives and eyepieces can extend the total magnification range from 2.25X up to 200X.
Auxiliary Objectives
The standard 110mm working distance offers enough space for sample manipulation at various magnifications. At the lowest zoom setting with 10X eyepieces, the maximum field diameter is 30.7mm.
Eyepieces
The standard widefield 10x/23mm eyepieces are designed for comfort, even for users who wear glasses. Each eyepiece has an individual diopter adjustment (+/- 5 dpt), and rubber eye guards help reduce stray light and improve comfort. The series also offers eyepieces with different magnifications and a range of reticules for measurement.
Three-Dimensional Imaging
The SMZ-171 uses the Greenough Optical System, which features completely separated optical paths. This system has been a standard in microscopy for over a century and delivers impressive, distortion-free 3D images with high resolving power, up to 460 lp/mm when using a 2x auxiliary objective.
Working Distance
The standard configuration provides a working distance of 110mm, which can be extended to 301mm with an additional auxiliary objective. Lower objective magnifications can be compensated for by using higher magnification eyepieces, up to 20x.
The optical heads are available as binocular or trinocular versions with a 45° viewing angle, 10X eyepieces, and a built-in 1X objective. Interpupillary distance can be adjusted from 48mm to 75mm. For special applications, a binocular head with a 60° viewing angle is available. All optics are treated to resist fungus, making the microscope suitable for humid environments. The SMZ-171 can be mounted on a variety of stands, including classic pole stands (32mm diameter) and new arm stands, both available in ESD versions for electrostatic-sensitive environments.
Modular Configuration
The SMZ-171 offers a modular system to suit different workplace needs. Industrial boom stands can be used for larger samples, replacing the base stands and increasing flexibility. All stands require separate illumination systems tailored to the sample.
Illumination
Proper illumination is essential for stereo microscopy. The SMZ-171 supports a range of illumination options, including ring lights for shadow-free imaging and unidirectional illuminators for highlighting surface structures, using a cold light source and light guide.
Digital Documentation
The SMZ-171 can easily be combined with Moticam digital cameras for live imaging and digital documentation. All Motic cameras include software that transforms the microscope into a workstation for analysis and documentation. The trinocular version allows the use of different camera adapters, depending on the camera’s chip size.
