Starizona HyperStar for EdgeHD 1100 telescope v4 (44128)
HyperStar is a multi-lens correction system that replaces the standard secondary mirror in the Schmidt corrector plate of a Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. The HyperStar optics correct for coma and field curvature, functions normally performed by the secondary mirror. The CCD or DSLR camera mounts directly onto the front of the telescope using this system.

How HyperStar Works
HyperStar is a multi-lens correction system that replaces the standard secondary mirror in the Schmidt corrector plate of a Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. The HyperStar optics correct for coma and field curvature, functions normally performed by the secondary mirror. The CCD or DSLR camera mounts directly onto the front of the telescope using this system.
Benefits and Results
-
Your standard Celestron SC telescope is transformed into a digital Schmidt camera for imaging at the primary focus, reaching f/2 (C8, C11) or f/1.9 (C14).
-
Dramatically increases imaging efficiency. A 30-second exposure at f/2 equals the brightness of a 12-minute exposure at f/10—shortening exposure times by about 25 times.
-
Reduces issues with blurring from atmospheric turbulence and tracking errors.
-
Short exposure times mean that field rotation is not a problem, so you do not need an equatorial mount for deep sky imaging.
-
Easily stack short exposures using image processing for excellent results.
Compatibility and Conversion
-
HyperStar optics kits are available for C8, C9.25, C11, and C14 optical tube assemblies.
-
Mechanical conversion kits are available for making standard SC telescopes HyperStar compatible.
-
FastStar versions of Celestron telescopes can be directly converted; simply unscrew the secondary mirror and install the HyperStar system using the adapter ring.
Key Advantages of HyperStar Optics
-
Converts your standard Celestron SC telescope into a digital Schmidt camera, but also allows use as a normal SC telescope.
-
Eliminates issues with primary mirror shift.
-
Enables extremely short exposure times.
-
Simplifies tracking, allowing for high-quality astrophotography even with basic altazimuth mounts.
-
No need for precise polar alignment during mobile operation thanks to the short exposures.
-
High light-gathering power and wide field enable narrowband astrophotography.
-
DSLR cameras perform best at f/2, their optimal design.
-
Compatible with the latest generation of Celestron SC HD OTAs.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
How do you focus with HyperStar?
Use the main mirror, as with the standard telescope. -
Can you observe visually through FastStar/HyperStar?
No, visual observation is not possible since the camera blocks the aperture. -
Does mirror shift affect focusing?
Removing the secondary mirror reduces mirror shift by a factor of 5; it is no longer a concern. -
How is the image quality?
Comparable to RC astrographs. Suitable for semi-professional cameras. Stars appear finer than at f/10. -
Is camera obstruction a problem?
Not for imaging. Most professional telescopes have much larger obstructions than a Celestron SC with HyperStar and DSLR. -
How do you collimate with HyperStar?
The HyperStar lens is pre-collimated. Returning to standard configuration requires no new collimation, as the secondary mirror is reinstalled as a calibrated unit. -
Any disadvantages to using HyperStar?
You may not want to go to bed on clear, moonless nights!
HyperStar is the fastest and simplest way to begin deep sky astrophotography. No polar alignment, equatorial mount, or guiding is needed. Your Celestron 8", 11", or 14" SC telescope becomes a lightning-fast digital Schmidt camera. Deep sky imaging takes seconds instead of hours.
