The Sky-Watcher AZ-EQ5 mount is a computerized hybrid mount equipped with a SynScan GoTo controller, dual-axis drive with encoders, and a stable tripod.

The AZ-EQ5 is based on the larger AZ-EQ6 model and represents a substantial upgrade of the well-known and proven HEQ-5. Compared to the AZ-EQ6, this mount is significantly lighter and more portable while still offering a payload capacity suitable for advanced astrophotography. Its maximum payload is 15 kg. Thanks to several innovative design solutions, it is one of the most attractive options in its price range. Key features include hybrid stepper motors and the ability to operate in both equatorial and alt-azimuth modes.

The AZ-EQ5 features a USB port (unlike earlier RS-232-based versions), an autoguider port, and a camera control port for DSLR triggering. In alt-azimuth mode, the counterweight bar can be replaced with an additional saddle, allowing two optical tubes to be mounted simultaneously on opposite sides of the axis (with Vixen-style dovetail mounts). Ergonomics have been carefully considered: adjustment knobs are large and comfortable, and the polar axis can be set manually with minimal force.

A notable aspect of the control system is the dual-encoder technology that tracks the telescope's movement independently of the motor drive. This “Freedom Find” feature allows the telescope to be moved by hand in either axis without losing GoTo alignment.

The mount uses the latest SynScan Version 5 controller, containing a database of 42,000 objects. Standard GoTo alignment uses three stars, but simplified two-star or even one-object alignment is also possible. The mount can track at sidereal, solar, or lunar rates. Performance can be further refined through PEC (Period Error Correction) and PAE (Pointing Accuracy Enhancement). The right ascension worm gear includes a reference mark that improves PEC accuracy. The PEC data can be stored permanently in internal memory (PPEC).

The system includes features to assist with polar alignment. The built-in USB port allows mount control from a computer without adapter cables, and the included RS-232 cable allows firmware updates. A GPS module can optionally be connected for precise time and location data.

The mount weighs 14 kg and includes two 3.5 kg counterweights. Additional optional accessories include a polar scope and a 12 V power supply (the mount comes with a car-lighter power cable by default).

A GPS module is recommended for all SynScan GoTo mounts, providing automatic and hands-free astronomical coordinate and time settings.
