Description

Availability: Preorder

The Nikon ZR 6K Cinema Camera Body combines RED color science with Nikon engineering in a compact, cinema-ready package designed to deliver stunning, cinematic images. This small Z-mount camera supports a wide range of lenses and features in-body image stabilization for smooth, stable footage with more than 15 stops of dynamic range. Key capabilities include 32-bit float audio, advanced subject-detection autofocus, dual-base ISO, and internal recording of up to 6K60 video in REDCODE, N-RAW, or ProRes RAW.

Nikon and RED Color Science
This collaboration offers flexible integration into professional workflows. The ZR supports REDCODE RAW R3D NE, Nikon N-RAW, ProRes RAW HQ, ProRes 422 HQ, and high-quality H.264 and H.265 compression codecs. Using REDCODE RAW (R3D NE) gives access to REDWideGamutRGB color space and Log3G10 gamma, matching RED cinema cameras for grading and finishing.

The camera supports resolutions and frame rates up to:

  • 6K at up to 60 fps

  • 4K at up to 120 fps

  • Full HD 1080p at up to 240 fps for detailed slow-motion sequences

High-Quality Audio Capture
The ZR is built for professional audio as well as video. It supports dynamic 32-bit float and 24-bit audio recording at 48 kHz linear PCM, ensuring compatibility with standard video post-production workflows.

The camera includes built-in configurable microphones with five pickup patterns: front/narrow, front, rear, omnidirectional, and binaural. A line input allows the use of external microphones, and the digital accessory shoe supports compatible options such as the ME-D10 shotgun microphone. A dedicated headphone output lets you monitor your audio in real time.

Recording Media and Video Output
Footage is recorded internally to a CFexpress Type B card, accessed through the battery compartment to keep the camera small and portable. A secondary microSD card slot is available for proxy recordings. For external monitoring or recording, a micro-HDMI output can be used to send the video signal to a monitor or recorder.

Advanced Autofocus
The autofocus system uses deep-learning technology to enable up to nine types of subject detection. It can automatically recognize and track people, animals, and vehicles, helping you keep subjects in focus even in fast-moving or complex scenes.

Nikon Z Mount and Accessory Ecosystem
The Nikon Z mount is a wide, shallow, full-frame mirrorless mount, making it highly adaptable and compatible with a broad range of NIKKOR Z lenses and many third-party lenses via adapters.

The ZR also benefits from a large ecosystem of accessories, including cages, microphones, handles, grip systems, and full rigs from Nikon and third-party brands such as SmallRig.

Large, Bright Display
The ZR features a built-in 4" variable-angle touchscreen display with DCI-P3 color gamut coverage, 1000 cd/m² brightness, and a 3.07-million-dot resolution. This makes it easy to assess exposure, focus, and color, and to navigate camera menus.

The display automatically rotates when switching between horizontal (landscape) and vertical (portrait) shooting.

Custom LUT Loading
You can load up to 10 custom LUTs directly into the camera, enabling real-time look preview on the built-in display while still recording log or RAW formats for maximum post-production flexibility.

Lenses and Image Stabilization
The Nikon Z mount allows use of the complete NIKKOR Z lens lineup along with many third-party lenses via adapters. The ZR includes integrated 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization, offering up to 7.5 stops of compensation with compatible lenses. This helps produce smooth, stable footage even when shooting handheld or with lightweight rigs.

Dual-Base ISO and Shutter Angle Control
The dual-base ISO system provides base values of 800 and 6400 for both Log3G10 and N-Log profiles, giving cleaner results in both bright and low-light environments.

The shutter angle can be set in 15 steps from 5.6° to 360°, allowing precise control over motion blur and exposure to match traditional cinema standards.

Frame.io Workflow Integration
Using the companion app, you can connect the camera to your smartphone and integrate with the optional Frame.io cloud service. This streamlines asset upload, review, collaboration, and workflow integration for post-production and remote teams.

Filmmaker-Focused User Interface
The ZR includes a simple stills/video mode switch and multiple customizable function buttons to help you get shooting quickly. A shortcut menu provides fast access to filmmaking essentials such as grid overlays, zebra patterns, waveform monitoring, touch AF, focus peaking, and other image tools.

Flexible Power Options
The camera can be powered using a single EN-EL15c battery or via USB-C from an external power source such as a dedicated AC adapter or power bank, which is particularly useful for long shoots or rigged setups.

Ultracompact Cinema Design
Although it packs full cinema capabilities, the ZR is similar in size to a small mirrorless body. Its lightweight, compact design makes it ideal for field work, vehicle mounting, gimbals, steadicams, drones, and POV applications where space and weight are limited.

Nikon Z 24–70mm f/4 S Lens
The NIKKOR Z 24–70mm f/4 S is a versatile standard zoom lens covering wide-angle to portrait-length focal lengths, designed for FX-format Z-mount mirrorless cameras. Its constant f/4 maximum aperture maintains consistent exposure throughout the zoom range while helping keep the lens compact and lightweight compared to faster zooms.

The optical design includes one aspherical extra-low dispersion element and three aspherical elements, which help to minimize chromatic aberrations, distortion, coma, and flare, delivering high edge-to-edge sharpness and even illumination across the frame. Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings are applied to reduce internal reflections, flare, and ghosting, improving contrast and color accuracy in bright or backlit scenes.

A stepping motor provides smooth, quiet, and precise autofocus performance, making the lens well suited for both stills and video. Full-time manual focus override is available, and the internal focusing design ensures the lens does not change length while focusing, aiding balance and focusing speed.

A programmable control ring can be set to adjust manual focus by default or reassigned to control aperture or exposure compensation, depending on your preferences. A specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism improves exposure stability during continuous shooting. The rounded seven-blade diaphragm produces smooth, pleasing bokeh for shallow depth-of-field images. The front and rear elements feature a fluorine coating for resistance to dust, grease, and moisture, and the lens barrel is weather-sealed for use in challenging conditions. A button-less retractable design allows the lens to collapse to a smaller size when not in use for easier storage and transport.
