Ricoh GR III (SKU 15038)

The Ricoh GR III is the long-awaited next model in the popular GR series of fast, compact cameras. It continues the GR tradition as a genuinely pocketable camera that still delivers excellent image quality, rapid performance, and high portability. With a redesigned imaging system, the GR III uses a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and the GR Engine 6 to produce smooth tonal gradation, rich colors, and high sensitivity from ISO 100 to 102400. It can capture high-resolution 14-bit DNG or JPEG stills and also record Full HD video. The camera features a newly developed 28mm-equivalent prime lens with a bright f/2.8 aperture, ideal for everyday scenes and street photography. For the first time in a GR model, a 3-axis sensor-shift Shake Reduction system is included to reduce the effects of camera shake and help deliver sharper handheld photos at slower shutter speeds.

Physically, the GR III retains the familiar compact form factor, but the controls have been reworked to provide a larger, more comfortable grip while still keeping key buttons within easy reach. A 3.0" 1.037M-dot touchscreen LCD is used for composing images, reviewing shots, and navigating menus, and it supports touch autofocus for intuitive operation. Built-in Bluetooth Low Energy and Wi-Fi allow quick pairing with a smartphone or tablet for easy wireless file transfer and remote control.

24.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor and GR Engine 6
The GR III’s 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor works together with the GR Engine 6 image processor to deliver high-resolution 14-bit DNG and JPEG files with smooth tonality, natural color, and excellent detail. The wide ISO range of 100–102400 allows shooting in both bright and low-light environments.

In addition to using the full sensor area, the camera offers built-in crop modes that emulate longer focal lengths:

• 35mm equivalent at 15MP

• 50mm equivalent at 7MP

These crops give you the feel of longer lenses while maintaining a compact, fixed-lens design.

For video, the GR III can record Full HD 1080p at 60p, 30p, and 24p frame rates using the MOV/H.264 format.

Prime Wide-Angle GR Lens
The GR III uses a fixed 18.3mm lens, which provides a 28mm equivalent field of view on full-frame. This classic wide-angle focal length is paired with a bright f/2.8 maximum aperture, making it suitable for street, travel, and everyday photography, as well as low-light situations.

The optical design consists of 6 elements in 4 groups, including two aspherical elements. This construction reduces spherical aberrations and distortion, improving sharpness and accurate rendering across the frame.

Focusing modes include:

• Normal: from 3.9" (10 cm) to infinity

• Macro: from 2.4–4.7" (6–12 cm) for close-up subjects

An internal two-stop ND filter (ND 0.6) can be activated to slow the shutter speed or allow the use of wider apertures in bright light. A 9-blade diaphragm helps produce smooth, pleasing bokeh. The redesigned lens also offers higher contrast and is 1.5 mm thinner than the lens in the previous GR/GR II models, contributing to the compact body profile.

3-Axis Shake Reduction System
For the first time in a GR series camera, the GR III features a 3-axis sensor-shift Shake Reduction system. This stabilization helps minimize the appearance of camera shake, allowing sharper handheld images at slower shutter speeds. The system has been optimized specifically for the built-in 28mm-equivalent lens, which makes it both more compact and more efficient. The SR unit is also used to provide moiré reduction and to assist with dust removal from the sensor.

Body Design and Handling

• The GR series is known for combining a large APS-C sensor and a fast prime lens in a truly pocketable body, making the camera easy to carry at all times.

• The 3.0" 1.037M-dot LCD features a fixed design with capacitive touchscreen control. This allows intuitive focusing, image review, and menu navigation using touch gestures.

• The rear controls have been rearranged to make room for a larger, more comfortable thumb grip. Key physical dials and buttons are placed for quick access, and the ADJ lever, FN button, and Touch AF operations can be customized with user-assigned functions for a personalized control layout.

• Start-up time has been reduced to approximately 0.8 seconds, and Hybrid AF performance has been sped up for more responsive focusing.

• Built-in Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi enable wireless connection to a smartphone or tablet. You can embed location data in your images (when paired with a mobile device) and transfer files even when the camera is powered off.

• The included DB-110 rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides roughly 200 still shots per charge.

• A USB Type-C port allows both data transfer and in-camera battery charging, making it convenient for travel and everyday use.
