Sony Alpha a9 mkII Body (SKU ILCE9M2B.CEC)

The Sony Alpha a9 II is the second generation of Sony’s pro-speed full-frame mirrorless line. It builds on the original a9 by keeping the same 24.2MP stacked Exmor RS BSI CMOS sensor and BIONZ X processor, but adds faster workflow tools, better connectivity, and a more refined body design. The camera can shoot silently at up to 20 frames per second with the electronic shutter, or up to 10 fps with the mechanical shutter, across a wide ISO range that extends to ISO 204800 (expanded). A 693-point phase-detection AF system covers most of the frame, delivering intelligent subject tracking and Real-time Eye AF to maintain critical focus on moving subjects. The BIONZ X engine performs up to 60 AF/AE calculations per second, helping the camera stay locked onto fast, unpredictable action. For video, the a9 II records UHD 4K up to 30p, as well as Full HD up to 120p. The built-in 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE stabilization compensates for up to 5.5 stops of camera shake for sharper handheld stills and video.

The body has been redesigned for better ergonomics, improved weather sealing, and enhanced connectivity. A 3.69-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder offers a bright, detailed, blackout-free viewing experience, ideal for tracking fast subjects. The 3.0" 1.44-million-dot rear tilting LCD is touch-enabled for intuitive focus and menu control. Dual UHS-II SD card slots provide flexible storage options, and an upgraded 1000BASE-T Ethernet port allows fast wired LAN transfer and remote control. Integrated 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi plus Bluetooth support wireless transfer and remote operation. A Voice Memo feature lets you record up to 60-second audio notes per image, which can be converted to text and embedded into metadata using the Transfer & Tagging app.

24.2MP Stacked Sensor and BIONZ X Processor

The a9 II uses a 24.2MP Exmor RS back-illuminated stacked CMOS sensor paired with an updated BIONZ X processor. This combination offers:

• Up to 20 fps continuous shooting with the electronic shutter

• Up to 10 fps continuous shooting with the mechanical shutter

• High sensitivity with low noise, up to an expanded ISO 204800

• 14-bit uncompressed RAW recording for greater colour and grading flexibility

A high-speed front-end LSI works alongside the BIONZ X to accelerate processing and maintain a wide dynamic range with smooth tonal transitions. The AF/AE system evaluates the scene up to 60 times per second, supporting precise tracking and exposure adjustments as situations change. Anti-flicker shooting detects flickering light and times exposures to minimise brightness variation. The electronic shutter also enables completely blackout-free viewing through the EVF during high-speed bursts.

Fast Hybrid Autofocus and Tracking

The Fast Hybrid AF system covers roughly 93% of the image area with:

• 693 phase-detection AF points

• 425 contrast-detection areas

This dense array enables High-density Tracking AF Technology, which keeps focus locked on moving subjects in challenging or low-light situations down to –3 EV. Updated AF algorithms improve tracking of erratic motion. Phase-detection AF also supports A-mount lenses via LA-EA3 or LA-EA1 adapters, with continuous AF/AE tracking maintained.

Additional focusing tools include:

• Lock-on AF for tracking subjects within a selectable frame

UHD 4K Video in XAVC S

The a9 II records internal UHD 4K movies in multiple frame rates up to 30p:

• Super 35mm (APS-C) mode oversamples from approx. 6K, giving detailed 4K footage with full pixel readout and no pixel binning, for reduced moiré and aliasing

• Full-frame 4K has been improved for better performance at mid-to-high ISOs, allowing full sensor-width use

Full HD 1080p is available up to 120p, and both 4K and Full HD use the XAVC S codec (in MP4 wrapper) at up to 100 Mb/s with 4:2:0 sampling. The 120 fps Full HD mode supports 4x and 5x slow motion (when played back at 30p or 24p). Clean 4K 4:2:2 8-bit output is available over HDMI to an external recorder.

5-Axis SteadyShot INSIDE Stabilisation
