Description
Sky-Watcher Esprit EDX 150 mm F/7 Optical Tube Assembly (SW-2036)
The Esprit 150 EDX is the latest and enhanced version of the largest refractor from the prestigious Esprit series. It is a high-end apochromatic triplet telescope designed primarily for advanced astrophotography, serving as the successor to the well-regarded Esprit 150 model. The EDX version retains all the key optical qualities of its predecessor while introducing multiple mechanical improvements that enhance stability, usability with heavy imaging equipment, and compatibility with modern large-sensor cameras.
The optical system is based on a precision apochromatic triplet design. The central lens is made from low-dispersion ED glass manufactured by the Japanese company Ohara, while the remaining optical elements are produced using Schott glass. This combination effectively minimizes chromatic aberration, spherical aberration, and astigmatism across the entire image field. As a result, the telescope produces extremely sharp, high-contrast images free from color fringing and distortion, even at high magnifications.
Esprit Series Overview
The Esprit series consists of premium apochromatic refractors designed from the ground up as astrophotography instruments, available in the following configurations:
-
70 mm F/7
-
80 mm F/5
-
100 mm F/5.5
-
120 mm F/7
-
150 mm F/7
These telescopes are intended for demanding astrophotographers but also perform exceptionally well in visual observations. Their excellent optical correction provides outstanding contrast, high resolution, and a wide, flat field of view. This makes them suitable for imaging nebulae and galaxies, as well as observing planets, the Moon, and star clusters.
Improvements in the EDX Version
Compared to the previous Esprit 150 model, the EDX version introduces several important upgrades, particularly in mechanical design and compatibility with modern imaging systems:
-
Improved focuser with increased rigidity and load capacity for heavy cameras and filter wheels
-
Enhanced stability of the drawtube and more precise focusing control
-
Optimized system of photographic adapters and threaded connections
-
Greater compatibility with full-frame and large-format sensors
-
Refined mechanical components of the tube for improved overall stability
Advanced Focuser System
The telescope is equipped with a high-quality 3-inch Sky-Watcher Linear Power focuser with an 11:1 microfocusing mechanism. Its design is based on a steel track and four precision bearings, ensuring high load capacity and eliminating flex even under heavy imaging setups. The 3-inch diameter prevents vignetting when using full-frame cameras. A precise scale on the drawtube allows for repeatable focus adjustments, and the included adapters support both 3"/2" threaded connections and 2"/1.25" compression fittings.
Optical Performance and Imaging Capabilities
With an F/7 focal ratio, the Esprit 150 EDX functions as a powerful astrograph, delivering a large, flat, and well-corrected image field. An optional screw-in field flattener ensures consistent star sharpness across the entire frame, which is particularly important when working with large sensors. High-quality multi-layer MHT anti-reflection coatings and an advanced internal baffling system effectively reduce stray light and enhance image contrast.
This telescope is designed for the most demanding users, including astrophotographers building professional imaging systems and visual observers seeking top-tier image quality, excellent star sharpness, and flawless optical correction across the entire field of view.
