Prism rails, also known as dovetail bars, are primarily utilized for mounting telescopes onto astronomical mounts. Additionally, these rails serve as a platform for attaching supplementary accessories to the telescope’s optical tube, such as an internal focuser or a camera.
In the realm of astronomy, there exist two prevalent standards: the relatively narrow rails pioneered by the Japanese manufacturer Vixen, and the broader Losmandy rails. Losmandy rails, measuring 3 inches in width, are chiefly employed for supporting hefty optical instruments. Moreover, borrowing from the photography domain, we encounter the Arca-Swiss standard designed for camera tripod clamping.
Most astronomical mounts adhere to either one of these standards. Medium-sized mounts and larger often feature a dual mounting saddle capable of accommodating both standards.
