The Astronomik H-alpha 12nm filter is a high-performance narrowband filter designed for CCD astrophotography. It allows H-alpha light emitted by nebulae to pass through while blocking nearly all other wavelengths where CCD sensors are sensitive. This filter is optimized for fast optics and achieves a high transmission rate of up to 99%, making it ideal for capturing detailed and high-contrast images of hydrogen nebulae and other deep-sky objects. The "Halo-Free" design, introduced in 2008, ensures superior image quality by eliminating halos caused by bright stars.

The 12nm full width at half maximum (FWHM) strikes a balance between contrast and usability, allowing the inclusion of guiding stars for cameras with built-in autoguiders, unlike narrower filters such as the 6nm version. It is suitable for optical systems with aperture ratios ranging from 1:2.8 to 1:15, with minimal transmission losses or chromatic distortions.
